NEW YORK (Reuters) - Diamonds are no longer a girl's best friend, according to a new U.S. study that found three of four women would prefer a new plasma TV to a diamond necklace.

The survey, commissioned by U.S. cable television's Oxygen Network that is owned and operated by women, found the technology gender gap has virtually closed with the majority of women snapping up new technology and using it easily.

"Therefore, I have more evidence to support my hypothesis that women are just attracted to, and easily distracted by, shiny things."

So are barracudas. Hmmmm....

Not smart. DeBeers and others work actively to maintain a diamond's value, while Sony and Samsung work actively to depreciate the value of that new plasma TV.

So 75% of women want to be couch potatos (overweight)? Nope, folks, this is bad news.

Must have interviewed daytime TV pigs, there isn't enough to see on TV to even want HDTV.

Diamonds are metastable; graphite is forever.

Oooooohhh!!! Now that's my style! I have a Bosch now, and I love it -- especially for large batches of bread and such. But I've never really become accustomed to the center post -- hoping I'll win the lottery and get a Hobart countertop model. :-)

Good - diamonds suck anyway. Fake rarity controlled by a few companies, advertising campaigns to get you to spend months of your salary, hideous working conditions for the actual minors, etc. Brilliant but evil ad campaign that has got so many people convinced that they have to give a diamond for a marriage or engagement. I'll be happy to see the diamond industry tank.

Yes, and a video camera to record it all.

Even shoes lost out. The study found 86 percent would prefer a new digital video camera to a pair of designer shoes.

If the rest of the assertions about women didn't tell you that the survey is bunk, this item nails it. Women from what planet?

It's not that I love tv -- or watch much of it. I appreciate fine jewelry -- but if someone is going to plunk down several $K, I don't want it hanging around my neck. I'd rather travel or buy something everyone can enjoy. I can't invite friends over to look at my diamond necklace. Well, I suppose I could, but it's a bit strange.... :-)

diamonds suck anyway I agree. Diamonds are pretty much worthless, unless they are on a saw or drill, or some such thing. Jewelry in general is pretty useless. Why exactly is it that women want to blow thousands of dollars on these things? Oh yeah, so they can show it off to their co-workers and make them jealous. And they don't even like the co-workers to begin with.

Personally, I would prefer both the diamond and the TV.

Why? What is the point?

Do women think it's a show of affection to blow a few thousand on a worthless, shiny lump of carbon. It seems to me that a more worthy show of affection would be to put that money into a mutual fund that performs well. What's better? Being able to make the harpies at work that you never liked anyway envy you? Or having an investment for retirement? Or any of the thousands of other things you can do with the money than buy a small chunk of carbon?

Try it on around your neck instead of on your finger. That might be more comfy.
