From Staff and Wire Reports Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops says he's dismissing two players from the Sooner football team. Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."
Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed.
"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.
"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.
A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week.
He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.
"I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values," Stoops said in the statement.

Matt Leineart has a family thats loaded, so no one blinked an eye that he was living a life that more or less resembled a pro-athlete then a amateur.

Because if you are SMU, it will get you the death penalty. The NCAA would never do that to Oklahoma, but there are probably folks there who would love to come down on the school for its role in breaking the NCAA TV monopoly, and thus the program can't engage in blatant violation of the rules as can some of the programs.
OU the best texas team that money can buy.
They wouldn't do that to an Alabama either. They would however crush both with massive penalties making it virtually impossible to field a competitive team for 4-5 years and destroying the depth on the bench.

That is also why I said OU needs to get rid of the booster. A rotten booster can destroy a program in 15 minutes or less.
Agree 100% that SMU got screwed btw. That is what the NCAA rules committee does.

Can a non-scholarship athlete work or receive booster money? I sense that a car dealership in some university town is just going to bypass the whole system and pay a star athlete -- tuition and a salary -- for endorsements.
Makes you wonder how they got caught. There is no way to prove where cash came from, unless it is marked. Possibly one of the athletes was bragging to the wrong person.
Sounds like the Alumni who paid them (off) might not have been smart enough to graduate in the first place.

As a NU fan this is Schadenfreude, except we were planning on pasting them in the Big 12 championship game this year, I guess this puts a rut in it.

What depth did they have at QB? I dont think AP is enough to carry them there..and there DL isnt that spiffy either...while NU will shock the nation 4 times this year watch it, USC,UT, Big12 Championship and the National CHampionship...ok maybe a little fanboyism from me....
