Japan's space agency has provoked surprise among other space experts by re-affirming its ambition to build a habitable base on the Moon within decades. At a lunar exploration symposium in Tokyo this week, head of the country's lunar and planetary exploration programme Junichiro Kawaguchi announced a deadline of 2020 for sending astronauts to the Moon, and 2030 for constructing the base.

Well the moon is ours...we planted our flag first...

The Japanese had better get all the paperwork signed and fees payed before setting foot on the United States' Moon.

(Wishful thinking from one who believes we should have claimed it)

Deeply cool. I notice that no funding has been allocated for this yet, so let's see.

But if the Japanese decide they want to build a base on the moon, I have no doubt they could do it.

Go Nippon!

Wait a sec. Why don't we make it a joint effort if we are both going to the same place?

This is good. We need more competition in space in order to get us back on track.

If China establishes a base on Mars by 2030, all bets are off.......
