Well there was a time when I would have had to put The Natural in my top 3.
However in the last 3 years, unlike with most genres, I would say sports movies have improved with time.
So without further ado, here are mine.
I'm sure you will notice one similarity runs through all.
TOPICS: TV/Movies
KEYWORDS: gipper; sportsmovies

I'd like to add Slapshot, Friday Night Lights and Cinderella Man.

Rocky was a great sports movie until it was ruined by the sequels.

Miracle is definitely up there - a lot more realistic than I would have imagined.
I'm with retrokitten as well - Slapshot would be in the mix.

The only problem with Miracle is the real life story was better than the movie.

I agree with kevkrom that Hoosiers is probably the best Sports movie. It was much deeper than Glory Road, which I just saw last week.
From a pure exhilaration standpoint, I recall that Breaking Away made me cheer and feel great about the title character's accomplishment when he won the race at the end. The last lap scene is excellent. In the shot, the director doesn't cut away from a high angle point of view as the two cyclists battle all the way around. (And I believe it was the actor's themselves, not stand-ins). They were going at full speed. It's really well done.

Cinderella Man.
I've already watched it 30 or 40 times on cable and now am reading the Cinderella Man book.
