This week my parents and I are cat-sitting my brother's fiance's cat. They went away for the week so he could meet her parents for the first time. She has had the cat for 10 years.
We have never had a pet before. The cat got here on Friday, August 25 and it was last seen about 3:30 A.M. this Monday morning August 28. Since Friday, the cat has generally hidden under a bed or sofa during the day, and has come out at night to eat and use the litter box. We had no problem locating where the cat was until today. The doors going outside have always been closed and even the doors to the 2nd floor where we live have been closed.
My parents and I have searched the house several times over, looking under every bed and sofa. We checked under the stove, under the refrigerator, under the sink, in all of the closets and cupboards. We have checked in all of the rooms many times.
I am asking for advice on how to find this cat. At this time, I believe the cat is in the house. It would have had to go through several closed and locked doors to get outside.
Any advice in finding the cat is greatly appreciated.
Behind a clothes dresser, mine jump in any open drawer and then jump into the back of the dresser.
Yes, check the linings of beds AND sofas.

Cats are like telemarketers, whenever you want one, they're never around, but everytime you sit down for dinner they interrupt your routine.

My cat will sit on me as I'm just about ready to get up to do something.
Is the food still being eaten? Is the litter box still being used?
It seems to me if the answer to these two questions is NO, then searching the house may be a big waste of time.
Once one of my cats got under the bed, shredded the fabric that covers the box springs and crawled inside for a long nap (not a dirt nap). You might also check out any sofa-beds or reclining chairs, if you have any. Cats can get into tight spaces. Check inside of washing machines, dryers and also cupboards.

Some might be tempted to use 14Ga shot, but be sure to load with rock salt first. And don't shoot too many holes in the ceiling, ...at least until you hear it scampering around real good. The buy a real good dog, like a Boxer or Black Labrador Retriever. They can help fetch what you hit.
The cat ate food and used the litter box last night.
We're having trouble finding it today.
Being missing since 3:30 this morning isn't really that long. They can go without eating... without using the litterbox... that long. I bet it has not escaped if you've been careful about doors... but remain vigiliant about keeping doors and windows closed.
I think the cat's just stressed out, some cats don't transport well, and all the rummaging around looking is probably not helping. I'd calm down, let the house be quiet, and you'll see the cat come out eventually.
The cat is neutered.
Of course, you might be able to train a good German Shepherd to come out of the house just 'bout time your sister in law arrives. If you haven't found the cat, just find some fake fur 'bout the same color as the cat and wrap it round the Shepherd's neck like a bandana,...then when she finds the cat, no matter what shape its in, she'll be happy.
No problem, we've got tons of ideas to help out round yonder.
1. Check under the couch cushions.
2. Check the lunch special at the nearest Chinese restaurant.

No joking. This is a serious question.
If you have box springs, open on the bottom, check there. Check all wall spaces even if you thin they are too small for the cat. Behind washers and dryers, in kitchen cabinets, etc. Good luck, some cats are inscrutable.
Bait it with tuna and wait. I would strongly reccomend keeping it in a crate till it's owner returns. Cats are very sneaky animals.
