This thread is actually NOT for the above. It's a rough draft.

If the thread becomes full and cumbersome, the information could simply be sorted out and reorganized into a new file with the same title, and this one deleted.

I think Mankind had to discover boobs, sin, fire, hunting/gathering, fermented berries, fermented mare's milk and agriculture before beer. I think even the discovery of moose, cheese and showers preceded the momentous discovery of beer.

Maple flavored flapjack bunnies and beeber dams, on the other hand, are a more recent discovery, after which stuned beeber recipes abounded and somewhere, a deeply saddened Tom Daschle came into the picture. But maybe that didn't occur until hhe was brutally sporked by the axis of weasels.

LOL. I got another thread up that does what I was trying to do with this one.

I had a classic case of tunnel vision. Somehow, I had overlooked the fact that only the few people who read my post on the other thread would know what I was talking about. If I had just added "This thread is to discuss ideas for a Duke rape hoax file system" at the beginning, I would have been all right:)

Submit a script to see if they'll buy it. We could have a thread about nothing.

How can we have a thread about nothing?

Well, look at the stuff they're using already. A thread about nothing would fit in perfectly well.

I was just thinking, you're fair to middling with links and such. I got a few of the Duke lacrosse test model threads put up. This story has been going on since mid March, with FR threads typically receiving 500 posts and up.

You access this system by entering DLX in a keyword search. The key is keeping DLX reserved for Duke lacrosse file threads. Here's a test:

Who is running against Mike Nifong in the upcoming election for DA in Durham?

While I got you here. Let's say you had a "Dumpster Thread for DLX" where any and all links related to the story were posted. You end up with 1,000 links, which you want to sort into 10 file threads. How much of a task would that be for someone familiar with where each link belonged?

It would just be a matter of dragging one link to the appropiate file(s). IOW, It would be as simple as doing 1000 copy and pastes. Do I have that right?

It's very challenging to post 1000 links. I have posted a page with 840 external links (plus a bunch of anchor links at the top) here -

! HAL9000 - Links to News Sources (v 2.10)

I believe it is the most dense and complex set of links posted on this site. It was difficult to get the page to post the way I wanted it because FR's posting software modifies the HTML, adding blank lines where they were unwanted, and generally messing up the desired format.

Eventually, I wrote a PHP script to generate that page, and added extra features like opening the links in a new window. The main trick to get the formatting right was to eliminate all end-of-line characters (carriage returns, newlines, etc.) That preserves the format, but makes the page difficult to maintain in HTML format. It's relatively easy to maintain now in PHP.

Unfortunately, there were some extra things like HTML search forms that were impossible to post on FR, but I have them working on my local copy of the page.

I could tell you how to put 1000 links into an HTML file with relative ease. Yahoo mail has a bookmarks feature, but you need a mail account there. They're free, so there'd be no cost. You can download your favorites or bookmarks to it, create links there (type or c&p) & edit the order they're in there. It spits out an HTML file.

You could hit "view source" & post chunks of it with copy & paste. You wouldn't have a dazzling look with it, but it would get the job done.

Seriously, say each link was to look something like:

Tony Soprano Channeling Sam Spade (Re Sgt. Gottlieb - NY Times Star Witness, Duke Rape Hoax)

Liestoppers ^ | 08-26-2006 | Tony Soprano of Court TV Board Fame

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1690672/posts

Each one to be put into a reply post on the appropriate file thread. IOW, a file thread with 100 links would have 100 replies.

Would that be a simple matter of copy and paste X 100?

Obviously, you have a lot of motivation to undertake this project. I wish you had some better equipment, because it's helpful in this type of investigation.

Back in the Dark Ages of the Clinton Administration, I used to collaborate with a guy known as "jqp" on the Whitewater newsgroup. For years, we gathered every news article we could find on Clinton scandals, stored them on our computers, and used search utilities to connect-the-dots for research purposes.

Although we were not professional journalists or researchers, we broke a few major news stories (and several minor ones) and we did some incredible damage to the Clinton administration. Some of those articles are documented on my FR home page. We could not have done it without some good basic software.

So I believe that a person like you could find a smoking gun in the Duke scandal - but you really need some basic good tools and procedures to do it. When you have thousands of details to sort through, it's too inefficient to do it manually.

I haven't been following the case, but my sister is a Duke graduate. I'll have to ask her about it sometime.

Here's something that seems reasonably user friendly.

If you had a thread with 100 posts, each one containing a link formatted like #46 - how much work is involved in turning those 100 posts into 10 posts on a new thread that look like #45?
