You Might Want to Hold Off Installing Firefox 2.0 (vanity)
Firefox Support ^ | October 25, 2006 | Self

I was anticipating upgrading to Firefox Version 2.0 as there have been some good reviews out there. However, my version 1.5.0.7 does not show that an update is available. I did some checking on the Mozilla site and the update is out there. However, users are having a host of problems with the installation, lost bookmarks, freezes, slow operation, etc. I suggest that anyone who has not upgraded, wait a while or at least be aware that if you install it you may have problems like those shown at the Mozilla location.

I downloaded 2.0 yesterday. Then installed it. Have had no problems thus far.

Several extensions will not work though (Clear Cache, Download Manager, FasterFox, Show Image and Search Plug-in Hacks).

That aside I've had no problems.

Thanks for the comment. I know not all extensions have been updated by their developers yet.

I don't know if we are just seeing a very small number of users having a problem or if there is a larger set of users who are not reporting issues. So I'm just going to wait and see what happens. I like working with my current version so I'll hold off for several days or a week to see if they have a quick update.

I've used Firefox 2.0 RC's 1, 2 and 3 with no real problems. Some extensions and themes are no longer supported (or not yet updated for 2.0), but other than that, I think I works wonderfully. I was amused to see that when Macrobloat rolled out IE 7.0 the other day, it looked very, very familiar... ;-)

Apparently some folks have lost bookmarks. They suggest that you back them up first. Check out this forum page:

This is a vanity, but you might want to notify your ping list of some Firefox concerns.

When you upgrade try this page: http://www.extensionhunter.com/index.php?category=all&sortBy=weekly_downloads&page=0

It is for 2.0 compatible extensions only. Many, many of them.

I'm using RC3 at the moment; nothing funny so far. Some extensions and themes were incompatible, but they were disabled on installation. (And one cool thing Firefox2.0 does is to check for updates before starting. If an update is available, it's applied at that point and a restart of the browser isn't necessary.)

I've upgraded 3 machines without issue.

My only complaint is that "silver skin" my theme of choice isn't available. I have however "sphere gnome" again which was my older choice.

Thanks -- Hope I'm just being cautious and not alarmist with this thread.

People, listen to the thread poster! If you are a power user of firefox, i.e. use more than 5 or 6 extensions, DO NOT upgrade to 2.0 yet!

I use 22 extensions, only 8 were automatically updated for 2.0 upon 2.0 ff installion, 4 more were found going to extension homepages and manually installing new extension builds, but I lost 10 extensions so far.

Do NOT install 2.0 over a 1.5.x installation yet.
