The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I've lived in this area for 30 years now, and never saw this stream that flooded.

You know we'd have had pictures...

Ugh. Ate too much food. I didn't want to make any dirty dishes after washing all those so I had Talon take me to Outback. Mmm. Steak. And cheese fries. And mixed drinks. And chocolate.

Now I'm stuffed.

Drink some water, you're probably dehydrated.

You're probably right. Dry inside when it's so cold outside.

I'll say! The first time I ever mentioned it was to you, Rosie. Honestly...it had always just been a pipe dream...I don't believe I'd actually ever said it "to" anyone until I said it to you in that post! Maybe I hadn't even formed the thought fully in my mind until then.

Took me almost a year and a half from that post till I finally got one.

Sheesh...I've known you guys a long time! I'm beginning to think I may actually grow old knowing you!

I just wanted to check in and see if you did it. And you did! That is quite an accomplishment. You should be very proud of yourself!

I wish you would too!

Lembas has been a running debate in the Hobbit Hole since nearly the beginning. I insist they are digestive biscuits (which aren't biscuits in the American sense, but in the British "cookie" sense but trying to get that through to anyone is a lesson in futility!)

;-D

I hypothesize that Tolkien needed sustenance for his characters and he happened to have a plate of digestive biscuits with his tea and it likely sustained him while he was writing and so that is what he used.
