24: Anticipation Report
December 19, 2006
With the premiere of season six of 24 less than a month away, I thought I'd report to all you readers where I, personally, am at in terms of anticipation. You see, 24, while not the "best" show on television, is the most entertaining. It's the most fun, and it's the best show to watch in a group or discuss with peers the next day. Jack Bauer's exploits are at once ridiculous and life-affirming. He is the most dynamic, hardened, bad-ass character to ever grace network television.
As the seasons have gone along, and popularity has increased, the plots have had to get more and more extreme, while at the same time benefiting from budget increases every year. Knowing this, and knowing the way that season 5 ended (setting up beautifully for season 6), one can understand how excited 24 fans are for the January premiere.
The FOX promo showing Kiefer Sutherland sporting that ridiculously long, fake beard was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. So, I suppose you could say that my level of anticipation is, as of now: DANGEROUSLY HIGH.
My only trepidation coming into the season is that this will be the first season of 24 that I haven't watched on DVD. For all 24 fans introduced to the show via the wonder of DVD, you can understand where I'm coming from. On DVD, I don't watch commercials and, more importantly, I can watch as many episodes in a row that I want. And, sometimes, "as many as I want" ended up being upwards of eight episodes. One of my friends likened watch 24 on DVD to "hitting the crack pipe". I don't know if I can physically wait a week between episodes, let alone endure the minutes between commercial breaks.
So, while I can't wait for Jack Bauer to shoot terrorists in the kneecaps and use interrogation techniques that MacGyver wishes he could've thought of, I also fear that I'm not personally cut out for 24 in non-DVD form.
What am I saying? I'm sorry. I'm wrong. Nothing could ever mitigate my excitement for 24. I'm sorry, Mr. Bauer, for even showing the slightest bit of doubt over my fandom. Of course I can handle the commercials and the week between episodes. After all, FOX is airing the first four episodes in the two-day premiere. That's more than enough to prime us for the rest of the season.
That's it, I've convinced myself: I'm raising my anticipation level. It is no longer DANGEROUSLY HIGH, but LUDICROUSLY, BORDERING-ON-CATASTROPHICALLY HIGH.
For lots of us, Christmas comes on January 14th.

I'm watching the first disk of Season Five right now ... 16 minutes in.
President Palmer just assassinated.
That clock sound gives me the heebie-jeebies.
I know people who are hooked on 24 but I couldn't watch too much of it because it was too intense. You guys have fun and may the good guys win.
" One of my friends likened watch 24 on DVD to "hitting the crack pipe".
Too true. I thought that I would take at least a couple of weeks to watch season 5 on DVD -- the best I could do was 4 days (3 days of viewing, and one day off).
Must say, I have never watched a regular season episode and can't imagine how I could. Didn't even get involved until after season four. Bought all four seasons, watched em over a week or so of dark snow days, then waited.
Bought season 5 the day it released, watched it over a 2 day period and am now current. Will wait for this time next year to see season 6.
Don't give away important details, I'm just on episode 9 of season 2.
I agree with unkus about the intensity, I can feel it also.
I had season 1 for over 6 months before I watched it and the set must have been a bootleg cause 4 episodes were omitted, 7,11,14 and 15.
Wow. And I thought I was bad!
What do you mean it's not the best show on television.
All of you guys have fun and MERRY CHRISTMAS !!
And right back atchya unkus.
I HATE you
Thanks. It is so nice to be on FR with other normal, common sense, fun loving and over-all good Americans who know what it's all about.
I usually record the show and zap the commercials. On the few occasions I've watched it live I've learned one very important skill: If the phone rings, scream as loud as possible into the receiver "Do not call during 24, EVER!" and slam the phone down before hitting the "off" button.
Anyone rude enough to call during 24 deserves what they get.
LOL! I'm one of those people who, when hooked on a series, goes online and reads the episode guides for all seasons. :)
It would be nice if people don't give away the storyline, there are people who have not seen Season 5. In fact, there are people who have not seen all the seasons. Until this summer, we were one of those who were catching up with all the 24 episodes and now we have season 5 but have not had time to watch more than 1 episode. Please don't mention who gets killed, who survives and who's responsible.
We got Tivo because I don't want to wait till season 6 comes out on dvd, by then I'm bound to read somewhere an article or someone's post that gives away some of the surprise.
