Woman in Water Drinking Contest Dies

Sacramento, Calif. (AP)

A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately know how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

Wow. Water intoxication. I wouldn't have imagined such a thing was possible.

Actually, you accidentally posted it into Pelosi's website. The House Mother sees everything. She knows everything. And now she is coming after you! If she asks, I don't know who your are, and I wasn't there.

it is, by drinking way to much. When I was pg with my last child I developed a condition caused by being pg where I hypersalivate the entire 9 months of my pg(pregnancy). The only way I could get relief was to suck on ice all day. My husband had to go buy bags of ice for me from the store of which I would go through ever couple of days.

I told my doctor and she told me to be careful not getting to much water, so I limited the amount I drank when I wasn't sucking on ice.

I remember it from a couple of years ago. It happened somewhere in Northern California when a fraternity was hazing a student and he died from water consumption. The were forcing him to drink it non-stop.

The reason: Electrolyte Imbalance.

WoW! Who knew? I had never heard that too much water could kill you. Poor thing. That had to be a horrible way to die.

It's not all that hard to do.... A few GI's have died like that too.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

I have heard of fatal water drinking incidents like this in the past. Sounds like a helluva tort case.

It must not be too common. I've never heard about it before. The poor woman had three kids. I bet the station is going to get sued.

Those deaths had been publicized before. I wonder why the radio station thought this was a harmless contest.

"Ban water before it kills somebody."

It's guaranteed that ambulance-chasers are already getting ready to sue the crap out of the radio station, but I expect also we may ultimately see Warning Labels on Water! (Caution-Drinking 100 gallons in less than 24 hours without peeing could be hazardous to your health)

One of the rare times I would think a lawsuit would be warranted.

This radio station should be charged with manslaughter. The body must maintain a proper balance of salts and water. It's called homeostasis; it's why you sweat or urinate, or drink. It's unthinkable to have a contest that purposely disrupts this balnce. Idiots.

I do too. Why would they not let you pee? Makes no sense to me. I think a lawsuit will happen.
