Prayers to Backhoe for the Loss of Taffy

Saint Francis

Blessing  all creatures, great & small.

"We who choose to surround
ourselves with lives even more
temporary than our own,
live within a fragile circle,

easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality never fully understanding the necessary plan. "
from The Once Again Prince

We had to put our black Lab Sam down about 7 years ago because of cancer. She was suffering. My special needs daughter asked me what was wrong with Sam. I told her "Sam is very sick and hurts a lot. We are sending her to heaven to be with Bootsie." (My mother-in-law's recently departed dog.) My daughter scribbled a note "Dear Sam, I will miss you. I hope you feel better in Heaven. Love Dana." We still have this note and we talk about Sam's antics with a smile now.

Loosing a friend like yours is something you have to get right in your heart and your head. Time will help.

I like to think that when I go to my reward,my Sam will be waiting along the road, sitting under a shady tree ears up and wagging.

I've always said that if Heaven has no room for my animals ( and the good Jewish friends I made over years of association with the Temple here ) I want no part of it.

I'll go where they are.

Personally, I think God has a place for all His creatures, and that they wait, ever-patient, for us.

Losing a beloved pet is losing a friend and a member of the family. I know exactly how you must feel about your loss, for I still feel sad about the death of my favorite dog, Chauncey, a golden retriever....the best dog I ever had (even though I now have 2 Yorkies, who are like my little children.)

Oh Backhoe, I'm so sorry!

We had to let our 11 year old dog go last October, and it's so hard.

This poem helped me, I hope it helps you.

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

I just want to tell everybody how much their kind wishes mean to me and Miss Emily.

Mayhap we are fools, but we adopted a shelter puppy today:

Cole, the canine Circular Saw:

As Miss Emily noted:

Backhoe and I are the proud parents of a baby boy named Cole. He is a part collie puppy and so far has:

rearranged most of our throw rugs
stolen a pair of Backho’e shoes
discovered that heaters are hot
had diarrhea twice
thrown up once
scared the daylights out of our cockatiel
tried to eat my heating pad
stolen my foot massager

and he’s only been here an hour and a half.

The house is no longer too quiet.
Puppies do sleep, don’t they?????

And he steals shoes, and the mechanic's rag I habitually keep in my hip pocket...

Thanks, and I'll try looking at that link when the little varmint sleeps. Geez, if I had that much motion in me, I could conquer the World.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Taffy. Prayers for comfort and remembering the good times with her.

My last canine baby died from cancer when she was 13 years old. She was so destructive as a pup that a frequent comment (in jest, of course) was, "I'd give her away, but don't know anyone I dislike that much".

Congratulations to you and Miss Emily on the arrival of Cole, the canine Circular Saw. I know he'll provide as much love and loyalty as my 'wild child' did.

My smarter half was a thousand miles away night-nursing for the grandson who has recently left us when our cat of twenty-four (24) years died in my arms, having enjoyed as much as she could stand.

After all of that good time followed by the accelerating suffering she gave it up and I buried her in our grape arbor where the vinca flourished.

And shortly thereafter there appeared under my truck a ghost white young cat waiting for me to pick him up so he could follow us around from room to room, to see us off and see us back, and give us a talkative report.

We all keep the faith and the interest on it all is priceless.

My older brother the engineer told his wife they would not have another dog after they lost theirs to cancer after so many years.

But I am not about to deny us the full catastrophe.

And your dog looks in the pictures very like my friend Norm's which went blind yet was his constant companion. Delilah went on ahead and Norm followed a couple of years after playing his guitar in his chair.

Your puppy keeps that wonderful wheel turning for you.

Happy trails, happy tails.

Isn't it strange and wonderful how animals find us when we need them?

We got Taffy when Miss Emily's Shelly died- she had had her 13 years, through triumphs in her profession ( symphony musician ) and fame, and misfortune... and I have never seen another person grieve so much, and so deeply over anyone.

Not baby, or child, or husband or brother or father... never have I seen so much despair in a person- but she finally picked herself up, went to the shelter, and found that little white wolf.

And strangely enough, Taffy had been picked up a block from here, and I think we had seen her running around right before Shelly died.

And now, Miss Emily no longer lies awake grieving for Taffy- because the Canine Circular Saw has kept her up all night, peeing and dumping and chew, chew, chewing...

And throwing an old sneaker around...

That's life, renewing itself- happy tails to you and yours, Phil,

They sure do, Marvin- I just wrote over on Free Dominion:

Nobody loves you like your dog does. A deep, unjudging love that passes human abilities.

That said, I wouldn't mind passing Cole over to you for a while- we've been up, down, in & out, asleep, awake, and throwing an old sneaker around the bed for hours & hours & hours...

But Miss Emily is no longer waking up at strange times and grieving and mourning Taffy- because she's too dam' exausted from chasing a puppy around the house and yard...

That's life, renewing itself.

Somewhere, an old, sick dog stands straight and proud, basking in the Good Lord's sunlight once again, freed from that sick old body...

Meanwhile here on Earth, I have to go see what the Canine Circular Saw is getting into...

I just did- wow!

Let me guess- the little guy runs rings around that big, big fellow, and has him under his command.

No... they just look like it sometimes to fool you into thinking they're not up to anything and you can go to bed.

Anybody want a three-legged coon-hunting wonder dog that looks like a cross between an English bulldog and a yellow lab that grew up in Chernnobl?
