Large squid landed by anglers in Orange County

They're not quite sea monsters, but anglers here are landing squid nearly 6 feet long, far larger than a typical catch.

One Newport Landing Sportfishing boat came back Saturday with a load of squid that averaged 30 pounds each, and 5 feet in length.

A 4-pound squid is typical, but the largest in the catch weighed 50 pounds and was nearly 6 feet long.

"People were getting wet and trying to avoid getting inked," said Newport Landing manager Steffanie Hillerstein.

The boat was fishing the waters just south of Laguna Beach.

Anglers, using 10-inch long lures, needed nearly 10 minutes to land each of the large squid.

Been a lot of huge squid catch of the day stories lately around the world.

Makes me wonder what the squid are running from down in the depths.

You are correct according to Wiki, these things attack divers:

Recent footage of pods of these animals demonstrates a tendency to meet unfamiliar objects aggressively. Having risen to depths of 400-600 feet below the surface to feed (up from their typical 2,000 foot diving depth, beyond the range of human diving), they have attacked deep-sea cameras and rendered them inoperable. Reports of recreational scuba divers being attacked by Humboldt Squid have been confirmed. One particular diver, Scott Cassell[1], who has spent much of his career videotaping this species has developed body armor to protect against attacks.[3] Each of the squid's suckers is ringed with sharp teeth, and the beak itself can tear flesh, although it's believed they lack the jaw strength to crack heavy bone.[4]

Son attends OSU Marine Sci Seminars at the Coast here and the cold water theory is a good one.

The humpbacks have been hanging out in Depoe bay way over their usual migration stop over time due to cooler water and the huge amounts of food for them in conjunction. Even coming into the small/tiny bay to gorge on the bountiful food supply.
With the big snow pack this year gonna be interesting on the fresh water pushing out to sea and how that effects everything.

With the big come back of the Albacore in the PNW I bet the squid coming up from the depths for bigger trophic food are enjoying tuna.

Our crab is small this year BUT the meat is huge. Them babies are packed.

Octopus and squid studies are the sons fave, got to old/mature for bikini clad pics in his bathroom so now the walls are filling up with octopus and squid pics.

I agree with the one fellow I usually stand on the fence when it comes to the Marine Scientist and the fishermen.

Be nice for the two to work closer together. They say they are working on it but I have heard fishermen say the Marine Scientist get a little to arrogantly pushy when they are guests on a vessel.
Opinions vary.

I don't think 30lbs is particularly large for a humbolt.
