Actually, I do Novell (netware), PCs, Macs, and *nix: these ads are not funny. All it does is make people appreciate how good the real Mac/PC ads are.

Funny.

I'm worried over Linux's future.

The recent news that some corporate types are paying a license fee to Microsoft for supposedly infringing MS patents is serious.

It seems that SCO was only MS's way of testing out the waters to assert its own claims against Linux and use it to profit from or to destroy Linux. Apparently there have been payments for some kind of license to MS from Redhat and some big corporate interests just to fend off another larger and more serious legal assault from Microsoft.

I think the scale of the threat needs to become better known in the community and the infringing code, if any, needs to be rewritten.

IBM and Novell had better get busy with this, given that the SCO battle was only a proxy for M$ and the real battle to come.

Apple is in a better position here but is probably not entirely invulnerable. However, their old patents on GUI and some of the precedents should help them resist such a legal attack on them. And having so many billions in the bank helps too.

I'm happy to see Apple going for full UNIX 2003 certification for Leopard (OS X 10.5). The inclusion of DTrace for debugging and ZFS filesystem, both from Sun, is really excellent.

You don't stop lying, do you?

Obviously you're the liar, since you cut off the rest of my comment before re-posting a portion it.

Well if they weren't making such perfect copies of other people's stuff like Apple's GUI, while claiming protections of those things such as by patents was somehow "evil", maybe they'd find things a little easier going.

I have a feeling MS and IBM are in a state of MAD when it comes to patents. One reason IBM has crushed SCO so publicly and thoroughly is to show anyone - especially MS - considering a patent war with IBM what they are in for.

FYI Microsoft has a cross-patent licensing agreement with IBM and has for many years, which is not unusual for companies of that size. Novell recently entered such an agreement as well, but so far they are the only free software vendor I'm aware of.

I don't think those agreements cover linux, which IBM is heavily invested in and MS has made noises about. I'm guessing IBM doesn't wish to find itself in the same position as Vonage/Verizon or RIM/NTP over any potential infringements in linux.

I like the old SNL Wang spoofs. It was something like: "Stay busy playing with your Wang."

Based on what? It doesn't look like you knew such a thing even existed.

I think the second one is funny. The first one not so much.

Mac FReepers don't think these spoof ads are funny? Who would have guessed?

They're not very clever. There are much better Mac spoof ads made by amateurs at YouTube.

Yeah, it raises serious questions though I don't think ultimately we'll have too much to worry about.

IBM over there is the sleeping giant, and they're on our side. Besides, Red Hat continues to become this unstoppable juggernaut and I continue to expect great things from them in the future.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Apparently there have been payments for some kind of license to MS from Redhat and some big corporate interests just to fend off another larger and more serious legal assault from Microsoft.^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I wouldn't be surprised. However, these types of things won't go on forever.

Yeah, I definately like the new apple. IMHO OS10 was the best thing that Apple ever did, but with the availability of linux it's too little too late, at least for me personally.

At one point, buying a mac might have been in the cards but not now. The platform is *W*A*Y* too closed for my likes. At least now the OS is somewhat open, but now I can have my cake and eat it too. Largely open hardware and software.

I don't think there's anyone who doesn't know IBM finished DOS for MS and they partnered on OS/2, which means they would have agreements to share/license code/patents/methods/ect.

^^^^^^^^^^^^the latest "eye candy" for Linux called Compiz or Beryl, which pretty much came from Novell too seems to be a near exact rip off of OSX^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I've never seen anything like this on macOS, even with third party software.

No surprise, just more proof you need to spend more time learning the basics before you go posting any more of your loonix nonsense. I specifically mentioned 2 Apple programs that do it, yet you deleted them from my post and called me a liar LOL. What's even funnier is you didn't realize how stupid you looked doing it ROFL.

THOSE agreements only covered THAT technology. You really are exposing your lack of understanding on these topics, so please continue.

I took the time to look them up. Now it's your turn.

I'll say it again. Show us the cube. Your words don't mean anything around here.

Both of those apps appear to be basic virtual desktop applications, something that linux has had for years.

There's nothing stopping you from posting a screenshot. I called you a liar because I couldn't find it, and because XGL is something that has been in the works for a very long time. It only recently gained traction from Novell about a year/two ago.

Prove you're not a liar then. Show us the cube.
