DEVELOPING: Sinkhole on Pellissippi Parkway
WBIR Television ^ | 07May07 | Tonja Burk

Officials from the Tennessee Department of Transportation are now evaluating a sinkhole that opened up Monday evening on Pellissippi Parkway.

Its in the southbound lanes of Pellissippi, just south of where the Parkway merges with Oak Ridge Highway.

The hole looks to be about four feet wide on the surface, but a TDOT geologist says its at least 25 feet across, and goes under both southbound lanes. He says it was caused by water eroding the limestone.

Crews will work all night to get that sinkhole filled, but they likely won't be finished by the morning commute, and it may take all day tomorrow. People traveling that way from Oak Ridge to Knoxville are advised to take an alternate route.

We'll have more information as it develops on Ten News Nightbeat and at www.wbir.com.

Well - I drove over this thing this morning on the way to work. Should be an interesting morning commute.

Granted, it's not that 330 foot deep sinkhole like in Guatemala, but it's right in the middle of a central connecting artery between Oak Ridge and Knoxville.

Can this be blamed on Bush? Or global warming? How far is this from the carbon neutral estate of Al Gore?

Too far away, actually - he's up in Nashville, 3-4 hours away.

I’ve been away for a long, long, time.

I-140?

That sure wasn’t there when I lived alongside the Pellissippi.

I-140 makes up part of my “secret” game day southern loop. South on 1-140, north on Alcoa Hwy and exit on Neyland Drive. Sure beats sitting in the gridlock on I-40.

Well, yes she could, it’d just take about 20 guys to give her one.

*cough*
