DELTONA, Fla. -- A woman who went on a jog with her two dogs Monday night attempted to shoot a pit bull because she felt threatened, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

According to sheriff's deputies, Christine Bruce was jogging past 1435 Gainesville Drive in Deltona when she observed a pit bull in the front yard. Bruce told officials that the dog's owner, Rickey Ward, was exciting the animal in such a way that she felt like she was going to be attacked. Bruce, who was attacked by a pit bull three years ago, said she asked Ward to stop, but Ward released the pit bull and told it to attack her, according to a sheriff's report.

"If it happens to you once, you'll never forget it. I wasn't going to let that happen to me again," Bruce said in reference to the prior attack. "Large dogs are a leathal weapon. If they're unleashed on you, you've got to treat them as such."

Bruce, who was carrying a baseball bat, mace and a gun, shot at the dog but missed, and the pit bull retreated, the report stated.

"(My dog) didn't get but 100 feet from the woman. The woman wasn't in any danger, and I stand by that," Ward said. "My dog started darting off, and I said, 'Cleo, stop!' and she stopped. I got the leash and carried her back."

"Had I not shot at the dog, he wouldn't have stopped," Bruce said.

Sheriff's officials said Bruce went to the nearest fire station and called 911. She does have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, officials told Local 6 News.

Of course the pit’s owner denies everything. My money is on the woman as far as the truth goes. My guess is this is not the first time that dog has behaved this way and it won’t be the last

It takes a stupid person to own one of these killing machines anyway — maybe this irresponsible stupid dog owner has learned a lesson??? She should have turned some MACE on the owner -—

Ward released the pit bull and told it to attack her. Bruce,...shot at the dog but missed,

She needs to jog to the range and next time shoot Ward, he's the bigger target.

This woman has my complete support for what that’s worth. I would cut down on what she’s carrying on her walks though. She’s going to ruin her knees carrying all that stuff. Just pack the gun.

Been there done that, except I had to do it while riding my bike. I warned the owner well beforehand when the dog first took off after me as I passed by his house. Next day I had my .357 on my waist. Dog came running at me, BOOM! Right between the eyes.

oh crap. my pitt bull sleeps cuddled up next to me every night, yes he likes to cuddle, right next to you. Sometimes jumps on my husband’s lap to chill, and lets our cat boss him around. Just leave me out of your generalization of pitt bull owners. Granted, if my son hadn’t brought him home and the cat put his eye out the first day I wouldn’t have him, and I wouldn’t trust a pitt I didn’t know.

Thats just ignorant, pitbulls if trained properly and cared for can be very good and loyal pets. Many people have misconceptions of pitbulls because they simply read all the bad stories about pitbulls and have never known or even attempted to raise one themselves.

EXACTLY the same thing happened to me while I was in college at the University of Alabama in the late 1970s. Except I was riding a motorcycle on my way to work as an armed security guard. I carried my own piece, a S&W M19 .357 with a 4" barrel. I warned the owners too. But the white trash saw a security guard and thought cop. So I actually told the cops in the area. They said there'd been plenty of trouble with the dog and the owners. One thing about southern cops, they have a wonderfully refreshing point of view on such things. After I shot the dog a few days later I called 'em again. They said I'd done their job for them and thanks much!

That is OK, I will take the conservative position and stay away from them altogether. :-)

I’m trying to understand how she carried all that stuff...ok the gun and the mace can be concealed on her person...but the baseball bat and two dogs? I was walking two dogs this weekend and had trouble hanging on to a bottle of water. America’s got talent!

"My dog started darting off, and I said, 'Cleo, stop!' and she stopped. I got the leash and carried her back."

Liar. Besides, the dog should have been on a leash in the first place.

Hey, 2ndClassCitizen, how about this lady's style?
