"lots of people would think nothing of throwing away $1200 a year on slots. "

Just returned from Vegas, the stores were empty, no lines, and you could waltz right in and buy an IPhone, maybe they were all out playing slots..unfortunately I didn't bring an extra CC to be able to buy one for my Daughter and SIL.

I am a slotplayer at $300 a year entertainment purposes only. BTW won $700.

Personally I think this entire cell phone thing is out of control. What’s next, a phone that will automatically do the laundry for you too?

America has become gadget crazy.

Certainly you would agree that gambling, strictly speaking, is a losing proposition? I just used that as illustration that there are worse things to spend money on.

There is also a 24 minute iPhone Quicktime at apple.com which was a jaw-dropping experience. Yes, I only buy Macs ... but it was absolutely incredible!!!

As for the lines ... as far as I could see they are the usual Mac-heads. I oughta know, I wait in lines when they open stores and come out with a new operating system.

And that's bad because? Personally, I'm holding out until the "cut the grass" version is released.

The initial shipment of iPhones was projected to last until the middle of next week. Mac people wait in lines ... I don’t think there were a lot of non-Mac fanatics who waited.

I waited for almost 4 hours for the first Apple store to open some years ago.

I really wasn’t expecting to buy one. But I strolled into the Apple store, and was getting engrossed with the demo units. An employee came up and I ‘casually’ asked if they had some in stock.

Next thing I remember I was at the back of the store with credit card pulled out. Don’t remember how I got there! ;)

After you buy it how much does it cost every month to use?

It adds $20 a month to any voice plan for unlimited internet access. Previously, AT&T charged either 10¢ a Kilobyte or $40 a month for unlimited access.

Ok you two, I’m not an astronaut here. I’m used to my MetroPCS service I started in 2004 where there is a regular set monthly fee (mine is $53.15). That provides unlimited minutes, caller I.D., free long distance within the U.S., text messaging, and email. I can’t do the email because my phone is an outdated model and I never text but I absolutely have to have the caller I.D. What I dream of is being at work or otherwise away from home and being able to check my email that is on my home computer as well as create and send email. I also want to take pictures and send them to people and put them on the computer. I want to learn to sell stuff on Ebay but I have no camera. I cannot imagine the actual internet on that little iPhone screen. I hope a Freeper gets one and freeps from it. And by the way I can’t live without the Snake II game that is on my phone so I’d have to have that, too. Swordmaker, it would be worth $20 more a month to me. So thanks for telling me that.

Here's Freeper Rom's picture he took of FreeRepublic's web page on his new iPhone, Knight:

With the iPhone you can cover most of your requirements.

You can create and receive eMail.

You can take pictures with the built in 2 MegaPixel digital camera and those pictures can be downloaded to your computer or sent in eMails from the phone. They cannot be sent in Media Messages at this time. You can use eBay on the iPhone.

You'll have to live without Snake II - so far no Java or games on the iPhone... but that will probably be added.

The AT&T plans are not unlimited minutes for calling like MetroPCS... the lowest price plan ($59.99) has only 450 anytime minutes a month... but you do have long distance, unlimited night and weekend, 200 text messages, and unlimited internet and email.

So, who is it amongst us to have the honor for making the first ever post using the iPhone. That would be a truly sungular honor.
