People with blood group 0 are called "universal donors" and people with blood group AB are called "universal receivers."

If I remember correctly, O negative is the universal donor and AB positive is the universal recepient.

Thanks for the ping! I’m AB + but I never, ever heard this about AB plasma being so useful! All these years I knew I could receive any whole blood but never knew someone could use my plasma. I’ll see what I can do about getting a donation out.

The issue is indeed blood vs. plasma per earlier postings. The info you’ve copied is for blood only. The plasma is the fluid and AB plasma can be given to almost anyone, again per earlier postings and the Red Cross websites I checked. Never knew that or I’d have been doing plasma donations a long time ago.

Should I be concerned about the infrequent mooing?

Thanks for the ping Patty. I don’t have AB Plasma, but I will certainly pass this information along.

Well, there are over 250 on the troop support ping list, so statistically we ought to be able to find around 10 people with AB blood type.

It’d be wonderful if you could make the AB plasma pool larger. Not all of it goes to the troops, but the blood and plasma pool is fungible. So because the pool gets larger, then it is easier to supply the troops who need it.

DONATE if you can!!

And THANK YOU!!

...People who have the AB genotype have the enzyme activity associated with both the A and B alleles. These people have no agglutinins in their blood plasma...

AB neg here.

I have a tattoo less than a year old and I've spent time in the UK eating beef. I don't think they want mine....

Have I misinterpreted his statement?

You've extrapolated an untrue statement from it.

AA + OO = all kids AO, having A blood type is true.

BUT a person with A blood type can have an O recessive. Thus AO + OO means chances are half the kids will be AO (A blood type with O recessive) and half the kids will be OO with O blood type.

It is possible for an A blood type parent to have O blood type children.

Okay, thanks.

I was pretty sure I didn't understand it. Now, I know I don't.

I mention that I have high iron every time I donate to the ARC. They don’t appear concerned about it and usually say B neg is valuable...

It has to do with whether the blood bank has the special variance that allows them to accept high iron blood. If I went to Dallas I could donate mine with no problem, but here they don’t even allow me near the donor chairs. I have my blood drawn in the chemo room. I always joke that they make me feel like I have cooties.

I just looked it up (cytomeglovirus) and apparently it is not only for premies but for those with lowered immunity. Looks like I will have to give more often!

Bless you for doing that. I guess most of us have had it and thus carry antibodies and that’s a problem?

Patty

I do have a rare blood type but have had Typhoid Fever and Rheumatic Fever. The last time I checked they would not take mine. However that was years ago. I will be happy to check again.

I’m CMV- also. The blood service here (not the Red Cross) loves me to donate. CMV- blood is good for babies and cancer patients.

I’ve been donating platelets mostly lately. It’s time consuming but it gives me a chance to catch up on my reading.

Please do check again. The blood bank folks are always changing the criteria for blood donation. You may qualify now.
