As the summer draws to an end and thoughts go to what we will be doing in the next year, maybe a change of direction, new job, new school/college/university.

As this is Labor Day Weekend what will you being doing this weekend?

Do you see this as a family time or fun time with friends?

Do you think that being single affects how you feel and what you do during the Labor Day weekend?

What did you used to do as a child for Labor Day and do you think that children nowadays have as much fun or do they spend too much time in front of TV or playing computer games that something like Labor Day Weekend no longer interests them?

This is a bit of quick cobbled together thread as Dave was going to host a music thread but due to unforseen circumstances does not have computer access tonight.

Above all I hope all of you have a good weekend

Labor Day

Labor Day is the celebration of the value and dignity of work, and its role in the American way of life.

Labor Day History

As the Industrial Revolution took hold of the nation, the average American in the late 1800s worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in order to make a basic living. Children were also working, as they provided cheap labor to employers and laws against child labor were not strongly enforced.

With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first-ever Labor Day parade. Participants took an upaid day-off to honor the workers of America, as well as vocalize issues they had with employers. As years passed, more states began to hold these parades, but Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later.

On May 11, 1894, workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago struck to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives. They sought support from their union led by Eugene V. Debs and on June 26 the American Railroad Union called a boycott of all Pullman railway cars. Within days, 50,000 rail workers complied and railroad traffic out of Chicago came to a halt. On July 4, President Grover Cleveland dispatched troops to Chicago. Much rioting and bloodshed ensued, but the government's actions broke the strike and the boycott soon collapsed. Debs and three other union officials were jailed for disobeying the injunction. The strike brought worker's rights to the public eye and Congress declared, in 1894, that the first Monday in September would be the holiday for workers, known as Labor Day.

The founder of Labor Day remains unclear, but some credit either Peter McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, or Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, for proposing the holiday.

Although Labor Day is meant as a celebration of the labor movement and its achievements, it has come to be celebrated as the last, long summer weekend before Autumn.

No special plans. I just figure Labor Day signals the end of the very hot and humid summer. I used to hear that one should not wear white after Labor Day.

One of the things that I’ve noticed over the past 20 years is that secular holidays have been emphasized while religious ones de-emphasized. As a child, Christmas was the 800 pound gorilla, as was Thanksgiving, then Easter. Events like labor day came and went without much notice.

Been tradition in my house to watch the Labor Day MD Telethon. Even volunteered for the phones one year here in Phoenix.

Will have a hot dog and potato salad on Monday.

Other than that, nutin’ much. Just relaxing after a week of having kitchen cabinets ripped out and new ones installed. Exhausting week!

So ... expecting to receive Jekyll from Netflix tomorrow and will be watching that, reading my latest book “The Genesis Code” by John Case, writing some and ... just relaxing. Can’t do much of anything in the kitchen with no sink and no counter tops yet!

Though we do not have a holiday this weekend the first Saturday in September to me always signals the end of summer and you get that back to school feeling even if it is over 30 years since you left.

I think in Britain Christmas is still the major holiday and certainly the money spinner as far as the shops are concerned.

Our summer holiday which is the weekend before yours (it used to be like the rest of Europe the first Monday in August now it is last Monday in August). The government moved it many years ago because they felt it spread the holidays more evenly through the year as this is the last public holiday before Christmas.

Somehow though after it was moved it was never quite the same, the first weekend in August I think is still the busiest with schools having broken up about a week previous most families tend to start their holiday (vacation) that weekend not the public holiday at the end of month. Schools normally start back the first few days of September so most families do not want to go on holiday straight upon their return it is back to school, they like a few days to consolidate and remember the holiday and then buy the school uniform and other supplies.

Good idea to spread the holiday out but in practice it has not stopped the beginning of August congestion on the road that much. Though it has helped a bit and that was the general feeling that is why it was moved as we were having so many accidents at the beginning of August.

What I do/did on labor day:

I usually don’t do much. Mom did a lot many years ago.

I was born on labor day, 61 years ago.

Labor Day weekend is not a pleasant one for me. This year’s calendar is the same as 2001, meaning that Sunday, Sept 2, will be the sixth anniversary of my wife’s passing.

quick good morning Eleanor! and happy Labor Day Weekend to everyone!

I went to HS football game last night & it was a bit coolish(VERY HOT LAST WEEK”S GAME) & fall like. We won the game & the band (BIG swing marching band..350 members) was as usual outstanding

I have passed on a couple picnic/BBQ outings for Monday as I have a lot of things to do on home front that are more impt at this point then that sort of thing

Have the last outdoor concert of season Sunday & afterward a party at a local prep school welcoming new faculty & starting the year.

Here is link to Labor Day thread I did a couple years ago.. some info on history of the holiday etc.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1475743/posts

It was right after Katrina hit the Gulf coast & the pledge is a large flag that was rescued from the rubble.

Well, need to mow, do a SLEW of picture editing, do a TON of cleaning & begin working on a new webpage for an organization - those projects will carry over into Monday
