A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Labor Day, a national legal holiday over 100 years old has Over the years evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.
Labor Day,is a legal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Canal Zone, and the Virgin Islands. The celebration of Labor Day, in honor of the working class, it was first suggested by Peter J. McGuire, founder of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.

It was initiated in the U.S. in 1882 by the Knights of Labor, who held a large parade in New York City. In 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September and passed a resolution to hold all future parades on that day and to designate the day as Labor Day. In March 1887, the first state law to declare the day a legal holiday was passed in Colorado, followed by New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In 1894 the U.S. Congress made the day a legal holiday.

Parades, and speeches by labor leaders and political figures, mark Labor Day celebrations. Labor Day is celebrated in Canada on the first Monday in September. The first parades and rallies to honor workers were held in 1872 in Ottawa and Toronto, and the September date was officially recognized by Parliament in 1894.

The observance of Labor Day began over 100 years ago. Conceived by America's labor unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labor unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise.
Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

It has come to be recognized in the U.S. not only as a celebration of the working class, but even more so as the unofficial end of the summer season. In the northern half of the U.S. at least, the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day.

Many colleges and some secondary and elementary schools begin classes immediately after Labor Day.

State parks, swimming pools, and campgrounds are all quite busy on Labor Day, as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season. September is the month that marks the beginning of autumn. And, because of that, the average daytime maximum temperatures take a plunge during the month in most of the U.S.

DollyCali shares her "past"

Well..maybe a LITTLE bit! I am currently working harder NOW than ever in my life. The pay monetarily is ZIP. but I know there are other rewards. I am care giving my invalid mom & living with her in HER home & taking care of her home, yards, pets as well as her.

My first “jobs” were in junior high school. I did modeling and taught dance lessons.. Continued this until I graduated from college & then began a teaching career(Biology & Physical Education) of about 10 years in many geographical areas at the junior high, high school and college level.

While I was teaching in NC, I began my real estate career that started at a large firm in residential sales & ended in my own commercial business that dealt with Development, rehabs, and 1031 Exchanging. A lot of money was there and a lot of ego strokes, but deep down something was missing.

Following grad school I began a career in Hospital chaplaincy working with Cancer/AIDS/Hospice patients. Essentially, ALL of my patients died & it was my job to get them and their families ready for that transition. But this was the most rewarding career I had and it has helped me help others – even now – as I am officially “unemployed”.

Now it is YOUR TURN

Please join me and the other “Sistahs” .. Billie, Aquamarine, Mama_bear; and Dutchess and as you visit this thread over the next few days to chat, visit and see what is going on with your Finest FRiends, do take a few minutes to share a little about yourself & your work over the years.

We will also continue with any prayers/news regarding the disaster in the Gulf States.

May God protect and strengthen the Peacekeepers and Military personnel who will be helping the victims our fellow Americans in the South.

One of the things that always irked me was the media's claim that they were the people's watch dog. They claim to be the force in our society that stops government from doing things it shouldn't and causes government to do things it should. The media does this, it says, by informing and influencing the public.

Yet the history of media tends to show it publishes the sensational to meet the goal of attracting audience. In short, if it bleeds .. it leads. That goal has little to do with preventing the bad and encouraging the good.

The media's watch dog claims got me thinking about the media's roll in the disaster that is New Orleans. What would a real public watch dog have done. And if the media is not really a watch dog.. what kind of of animal is it.

I work in sales and am responsible for shipping my company's products all over the world. So I get to talk to some interesting people from every possible part of the globe this week alone I have been in contact with Poland, Iran, USA, Russia, Egypt, Belgium, China, Chile and Tunisia to name but a few. I have worked at the company for 24 years joining a typist in the buying department and within 3 months being transferred to the Sales Department as clerk and have now progressed to a Product Manager.

Good afternoon, all. Nice post, Dolly. I can't take a picture where I work. No cameras allowed. On the 27th of this month I will celebrate 34 years with the same company. Come to think of it, I get 6 weeks vacation a year. Have been for the last 14 years. Ya think the dems will tell me I have no right to this???

News still trickling in from family members. All OK, one with no house left but they still consider themselves lucky. God Bless President Bush and all working to help in the aftermath of Katrina.

What a wonderful job you did on this, Dolly - the opening, the pledge, the welcome - all so well-coordinated and informative, and pretty, too! Your attention to detail does not go unnoticed! 'Preciate you, Sistah Dolly - don't know how you find the time to put these together so thoroughly (and Wednesday/Thursday thread in such a short time!), but

Thank You!!!

You can add my little (early 20's) brother to the prayer list, he just got notice from the National Guard that he may be deployed to Louisiana. His needs won't be the same as the hurricane victims of course, except for God's protection from the criminal element in the city and from disease and fatigue. I heard they will probably have them working 18 to 20 hour days from a recruiter on the radio the other day.
