So far this fall, the bumper crop is cable grown

There is a very slight pause in the massive fall rollout from the broadcast networks right now. Take a breath. Hey, do you smell that? It smells like defeat.

The five broadcast networks have launched a good many of their series, and ratings have been lackluster and buzz virtually nonexistent. Where's the excitement for the fall TV season? What's the matter with you people?

Oh, it's the shows. It's always the shows.

The quality has either leveled off into mediocrity or taken a fateful dip, and the buzz that was barely there to begin with has all but vanished.

This has made it easier for viewers to skip the new network shows because there is nothing of exceptional merit in there, save for a handful of series that have been spotty in their ability to earn across-the-board praise and ratings. Translation: It's early, but there don't appear to be any freshman hits just yet.

I watch a lot of tv, and tivo has only increased that. But only about three of my must watches are on networks.

That's three more than for me.For the last 10+ years the only thing I watch on the networks is football.

Freedom of choice: It's a real killer.

...

But perhaps more than at any other time in its history, cable television has seriously damaged the networks.

My TV got fried by a lightning bolt several weeks ago. I haven’t bothered to replace it yet and can’t for the life of me think of a reason to do so.

I didn’t watch hardly any before I had Tivo. It gave me a chance to watch stuff I was normally not home to watch. Now I have to see a few of them all the time.

The broadcast networks have hit a wall because the de-massification effect of modern telecommunications technology has effectively split the mass viewing audience into many niches. With 60+ channel analog cable TV, 100+ channel digital cable TV, and 150+ channel small dish satellite TV, this split will accelerate.
