One-Eyed Deaf Driver, 82, Tows Trailer At 88mph

Oct 20 2007 By Gordon Currie

Oap Faces Road Ban

A ONE-EYED, deaf 82-year-old was caught pulling a trailer at 88mph on one of Scotland's deadliest roads.

Maurice Hollyfield told a court he wasn't paying attention because he had his stereo turned up loud so he could hear the music.

He also claimed he thought his car's rev counter was the speedometer.

Hollyfield, whose left eye is made of glass, was clocked by a speed camera on the A9 at Waterloo between Perth and Dunkeld. He should only have been doing 50mph.

David Holmes, defending, told Perth Sheriff Court yesterday: "He said the reason for his driving was that he was listening to loud music because of his deafness.

"It was a new car and the instrument panel was very different. He kept glancing at what he thought was the speedometer, but it wasn't."

Hollyfield, a retired engineer from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, admitted speeding on the notorious road on April 4.

A doctor told the court Hollyfield was fit to drive, but Sheriff Fiona Tait said: "His health raises concerns about public safety."

She told Hollyfield he faces a ban when he is sentenced next month.

Just taking a wild guess here....either bagpipe music or the Rezillos?

A doctor told the court Hollyfield was fit to drive

Perhaps the doc viewed Mr. Hollyfield as a divine instrument of jihad to work Allah's will upon Scotland's roads?

I believe the old man but he still should have to pay a fine.

50 on a tach and only 88 mph.
How do you get this car out of 2nd gear?

From the article:

Hollyfield, whose left eye is made of glass, was clocked by a speed camera on the A9 at Waterloo between Perth and Dunkeld.

Considering the fact that Dunkeld is home to the Eradour distillery, noted for being the smallest in all of Scotland, it's entirely possible that Mr. Hollyfield was either already feeling the effects of a stiff bracer or was speeding in anticipation of one, although one may also argue that he was most likely already subjected to enough sensory deprivation as it was, considering his preexisting conditions, which would likely be more than enough to cause the documented cognitive dissonance.

I just think it is nice to know they still use mph instead of kph like the rest of the Euroweenies. Or did the author do the conversion for us so we dumb continentals could understand it?

Apparently the Sheriff feels that he deserves considerably more than a fine

Perhaps additional confusion was caused by the trailer.

One can only imagine what may have been inside.....

Apparently the speed units are in compliance with a recent decision.

Victory for Britain's metric martyrs as Eurocrats give up the fight

A directive published today will be put to the Council of Ministers to be approved by EU member states within the next few months.

It will confirm the UK's right to carry on using non-metric measures such as the pint, the mile, and pounds and ounces.

I'm guessing that a comparable Florida story would mention that the trailer was stuffed with fifty illegal aliens and the tow vehicle was a 1970's vintage Caddy   :-)

W00t! thanks for the info and the link.

You're quite welcome, and I'm delighted that you found it to be worthwhile   :-)

Here's a nice, single-malt Scotch for you (dispensed with Imperial measure)....providing, of course, that you don't speed on already-hazardous roadways, towing a trailer and listening to music cranked up due to your deafness and while peering ahead through your one remaining eye after imbibing    :-)

(my own preference would be without the ice as that, in my view constitutes an egregious insult to the bonny Scottish lasses who made it, but you of course are welcome to enjoy it as you please   :-))

LMAO!

Indeed...Farmers' Markets seem to be magnets to 'befuddled' drivers as trailer parks are magnets to twisters    :-)

At least he wasn't a half-blind, deaf 82-year old Scotsman doing 88mph in a speedo...

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer see's a car puttering along at 22 MPH.

He thinks to himself, "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!"So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over.

Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back, wide eyed and white as ghosts.

The driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?" "Ma'am," the officer replies, "You weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers."

"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly twenty-two miles an hour!" the old woman says a bit proudly.

The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that "22" was the route number, not the speed limit.

A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error.

"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't muttered a single peep this whole time," the officer asks.

"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Route 142."

Old I know, and Corny too!

I’m pretty used to seeing folks on 1-5 driving way too fast with trailers, boats, uhauls etc. I get a real kick when they lose control and start whipping around all over the road. Eventually, most gather control, realize that excessive speed might kill them or others..... I always wonder if they peed themselves.
