Big Pharma and Big Brother join forces to drug children (April 2007)
Douglas Report ^ | April 17, 2007 | Dr. Douglas

Posted on 10/27/2007 6:18:43 PM PDT by ddtorquee

Launched by an Executive Order in April of 2002 under the guise of expanding the scope of 1990's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health has since received the official sanction of the U.S. Congress...

This commission is the driving force behind a massive policy shift that will literally turn public schools into mental health screening centers...all parents of public school children are supposed to be receiving written notice of these new federally mandated mental health screening policies. Some will also get permission slips to sign that will allow school counselors or other non-medically-educated bureaucrats to evaluate children for such nebulous things as "happiness indicators."

What kind of horse-manure is this? Anybody who's ever raised a teenager knows that..."happiness indicators" can be few and far between in that age group...it means they're normal!

This just further proves that the New Freedom Initiative ISN'T about bettering children's mental health. It's about drug profits. And to give you a snapshot of how much money is at stake, here's an info-bite from the WorldNet article I referenced extensively in part 2 of this series:

Eli Lilly's top-selling drug is the antipsychotic Zyprexa, with $4.2 billion in annual sales worldwide. Owing in part to its "first-line" treatment status in the TMAP program (the Texas project on which the New Freedom Initiative is based), 70% of Zyprexa sales are to government agencies like Medicare and Medicaid…

Now, imagine how high this percentage would be (and how much higher the drug's gross sales would be) if the TMAP model were to be nationalized - which is, in effect, what the New Freedom Initiative would do. And remember, this is only for ONE DRUG! The New Freedom Initiative could conceivably mandate cramming dozens of psychotropic drugs down our kids' throats.

"Do a little research, (or thinking) before you condemn an entire industry."

Sure it takes more than 10 years or so to get a drug FDA approved and it can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to do so.

So then, what sort of folks would even try to be in such a business?

Pharmaceutical Companies make BILLIONS, and they are simply not in the charity business despite the nonsense propaganda commercials running all over the place.

Your protests are way over the top, IMO.

I was DRA in a big pharma for years.

Regulatory...just one of the many bureaucracies we (R&D, Production Technology and Manufacturing) have to educate in order to bring a product to market.

We had a very strident ‘rubber stamp’ group back then that didn’t have any connection to reality whatsoever IMO.

I admire standing behind Bush on his defensible actions, but to give him blanket immunity to criticism is as bad when it comes from the right as it is when it comes from the left. In fact I think it’s even more dangerous, since the right is the only viable arbiter of moral values in this nation.

If the right can’t address truth, who will?

But do you think they have to be advertised on the 6:30 news?

It's called Free Enterprise and competition.

You were ‘middle management’? And you don’t seem to get that the DRA was the review for the FDA? You all didn’t educate the DRA. The DRA was the review and presenter to the FDA.

Pharmaceutical Companies make BILLIONS,

My company plowed 30% of profit back into R&D last year.

When a family member of yours benefits from our product, I'll be satisfied, but not smug.

I AM middle management. And some of our DRA people SHOULD apply to the FDA. After all, working for the feds doesn't necessarily require an open mind or an ability to think outside the box.

It takes hundred of millions of dollars to bring a drug to market.True. And similar truths apply to other discovery oriented industries. Many smaller companies have reduced their research due to this. They generally become market driven rather tnan product oriented, if they are going to survive.

Well said. Some companies only make and market five or ten products. As of yesterday, my company has 212 products available, with 31 in the pipeline.

Or how about statins to keep them alive afterwards? ... Do a little research, (or thinking) before you condemn an entire industry.

I've done the research. Statins are poison and your drugs have put my wife in the ER a couple of times due to "unanticipated side effects."

From what I can remember it seems to me the antidepressant market right now is full of generics. The numbers of drugs on patent in that class are small compared to past years.

Statins are poison

You could say the same about aspirin if you had ulcers. Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Some kids are allergic to peanuts. Should we put Planters out of business?

It’s heading that way right now. Not too many new Brand meds coming down the pipeline.

Just like there are SOME good education administrators....there are some good drugs.....BUT, big pharma is trying to shut down the very unpatentable products I use to have a decent life (bio-ID compounded hormones - transdermal type).....course I could be taking $10,000 a year rheumatoid arthritis drugs and the required pain killers, and other stuff for the side effects instead like one RA Doc said I should.....sooooo....while I understand your anger.....think about both sides.

We strive for cures every day. We make lives manageable for those who suffer from chronic conditions. We have families, too. You think we look at profits before lives?

Yep, that's why you charge Americans the highest prices in the world, then have special legislation passed that forbids us from shopping around for the best deal. If you folks believe that's capitalism, then I have a bridge to sell you in Minneapolis.
