Of course they are. To stay competitive, the US will shovel our money into the incenerator known as the public dole.

I bet anything that it will be coated with lead-based paint.

BUSH originally announced that we’d be back on the Moon by 2018 and then on the Planet Mars by 2025.
Without a Democrat Congress’ purse strings support our Planet Mars landing date has “slipped” to 2034, beyond my lifetime.
NUTS.

It would be really sad if their space station was misidentified as a ballistic missile and shot out of space by our missile defense system.

What with all the technology Bubba gave to the Chinese in the nineties, I’m sure the Chinese will be able to beat that date with hands down.

It’s always 30 years in the future till the program starts to ramp up. A lot could happen to the Cx program in 2009/10 timeframe...although STS is being ramped down and there are things going away that would be difficult (read expensive) to bring back if the decision is reversed.

Just finished Hoagland’s new book. Hoagland is the reason we’re going to send an expedition to Mars.

Don't get me started, but because of congress, Mike Griffin and Doc Whoreowitz's bastard love child is now 2 years behind the planned schedule (make that 3). Note I have no love for the shaft. I would much prefer a DIRECT or even EELV-based approach from both an engineering and space geek perspective. The most efficient
engineering solution is to buy Delta IVs and Atlas Vs. And even more than that, is to make the CEV launch-vehicle independent, so that it could launch on a Delta, Atlas or even a Falcon. Whatever was ready at the time. Then NASA could put the shuttle workforce to work building the Ares V and Lunar infrastructure.
That would get us to the moon and Mars quicker. The only problem is that Mr. Griffin, as smart as he is, is very set in his ways. He's chosen to give America the shaft. In more ways than one.

: why they are doing what they are doing the way they are doing it. If someone doesn’t already know they don’t have a need to know.

They’re doing what they’re doing they way they’re doing it for one major reason. They need to please the congress critters so that they don’t mess with what meager funding NASA gets. It just means that our society is denied the means to advance for another few decades, no big deal.
