Shooting accident kills man at Houston gun range

A man was fatally shot during an accident at a west Houston gun range, police said.

The 45- to 50-year-old man died after he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest at American Shooting Centers in the 16500 block of Westheimer Parkway, Houston police said.

This range is the one I use...and ...they are extremely strict regarding safety. Regardless....this is a sad event that can happen anywhere.

This is the range where the M1 Garand blew up.

They couldn’t find a first aid kit.

Sad.

On a side note: when did gun shot wounds get classified as “injuries”?

Was it really a gunshot wound? Or did the rifle malfunction and he got hit by a part?

Don't know....I'd imagine the employees are not saying anything to anyone but their attorneys...

Is the incident described in the article the M1 incident - or is this a second incident at the same range?

Is the incident described in the article the M1 incident

I seem to recall a case here in NC a few years back.

We had a local indoor range near the airport in Raleigh where a man came and rented a sub-gun and then used it to committ suicide a few years ago. The place closed up afterwards and never re-opened.

Why did the Garand blow up?

Was the shooter using modern commerical ammo instead of military ball ammo?

Here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, we have a large commercial indoor range, owned and operated by a guy who once won "an international shooting tournament". I observed absolutely no monitoring or enforcement of safety procedures, at least the last time I was there, which was over 10 years ago.

I said something about it once and the man proudly said "we've never had an accidental shooting here."

Thanks a lot, dude. I'm not gonna be first.

Sorry to hear that it happened in Houston.

how familiar are you with Top Gun? How would you compare the two ranges? Which one is closer to main campus of UH? Thanks.

The story didn’t go into details.

I like to shoot at a nearby range also. For the most part, shooters are very safe.

Even an “experienced” shooter can make a mistake with a new weapon. People should learn its operation at home and unloaded before bringing it to the range and loading it for the first time.

An M1 Garand will eat through any 30.06 ammo you can fit in the En-bloc clip.

Some have said that firing the heavyer grain bullets might damage your operating rod after a time. I’ve found no problem with 150-170 grain bullets. Now, the 170s do kick a bit in the ‘03.
