Egypt: 4 Women Die of Bird Flu

Bird flu has killed four Egyptian women in the past week, according to Egyptian health officials and the World Health Organization. The women, ages 25 to 50, were from different provinces, and the cases were not related, officials said. At least one was a chicken seller, and the others were said to have kept poultry at home. The H5N1 strain of avian flu appears endemic in Egyptian poultry; previously the last human case was in June. A total of 43 Egyptians have been infected with H5N1 since it arrived in early 2006; 19 died.

Bird flu hits northwestern China’s Turpan

An outbreak of bird flu occurred in Turpan in northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on December 29, resulting in 4,850 poultry deaths.
The presence of the H5N1 virus in poultry in the area was confirmed by a state laboratory on January 3, and 29,383 fowls have been culled.
No human case was reported and local authorities said Friday the situation had been brought under control.
Vice Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie said in early December that the possibilities of regional bird flu outbreaks were “very high” in the winter and coming spring, and the situation was “not optimistic” as there had been cases of poultry infection in a “relatively large contaminated area”.
The Spring Festival in early February is drawing near and more poultry will be transported and slaughtered for festival feasts, which could facilitate transmission of the disease.
Local departments have been ordered to step up immunization measures ahead of the festival, and monitor bird activities along the border and in water areas by increasing sample test numbers and frequencies of examinations.
Perhaps.....but some are still concerned about the mutation into transmission to humans....

I should have mentioned in #7 that the 1/2 million deaths were in the US.
That specific pandemic killed 50 million people worldwide.
been keeping my eye on it.....it’s in my peripheral vision....don’t know much what I can do about it though.
yep....and I read old documents from doctors back then who said they never saw anything like it...it works faaaaaaaaast...the cough to pneumonia to death.....hours.

That is a start. Another start is to be prepared to stay at home for four weeks during the height of a pandemic. I’m in earthquake country so that’s not a bad idea anyway. Last week when the power was out for 7 days we were just fine - and had two of the old neighbor ladies stay with us too keeping warm (although a bit crowded!!)

My cupboards and freezers are stocked to the brim. I have the fresh filters in the reverse osmosis water purifier, bags of charcoal; oil for the lamps, if the electricity goes out.
If it hits here - don't leave the house for anything. You'll be fine.
