Help!

Came home last night. Turned on the trusty computer and up came a long message, white on black saying: We apologize for the inconvience but Windows did not start successflly... with several option to start.

None of them work.

It then loops to the windows xp screen

Then to an ad for the mainboard

then to a scan devices screen

then to some sort of listing

This morning there was a listing that on each line named had a number of the programs I run at the end of each line. It has not come up this time.

The hard disk comes on for the main board screen and the listing screen

just type chkdsk at the prompt. Hit enter. It’ll take a few seconds.

This may take some time. Once finished, remove the XP pro cd from the drive and reboot the machine.

According to his post 71 he's at the recovery Console prompt. Not where he needs to be at all. Recovery Console is no place for first timers and only supports specific commands.

Chickensoup, at the prompt you have, type in "dir" (without the quotes) then press enter. If it gives you a list of files, then type cd \windows\system32 and then run the chkdsk /r command.

Why would he need the ‘\r’?

The chkdsk '/r' parameter will cause chkdsk to repair any anomalies it finds

Off hand, be very, very wary of a virus or Trojan at work. If you have a bootable CD with an up to date virus scan; run it. If you don't, find a trusted person who does.

You problem sound very virus like.

Or...nevermind since it seems chkdsk is running. Good news.

It is important to note any fixes it performs. It is likewise important to note if it requires a reboot. If it completes without fixes, then the problem is not the hard drive or file tables.

Checking the disk. :)
If it finds an error and fixes it you should be set.

Bookmark for Reference.

Had a very similar thing happen to my coworker's computer last week, except it was running W2K Pro.

Never could get it fixed. Even when I could finally get it to try to repair Windows, it would get to a certain point and just freeze.

We solved the problem by buying him a new computer (he was due for an upgrade anyway)

These suggestions may help me to salvage his old box for something.

Thanks to all.

I might also add: DO NOT enter in ANY passwords it might ask for until you get this resolved. If you have already done so, CHANGE THEM when it is resolved.

again, my $0.02

A big disk could take quite a while.
