Trapped with Charles on an official tour, now miserable Camilla knows how Diana felt

Tomorrow, after returning from the velvet opulence of the luxury yacht that was their floating refuge for eight days, Charles and Camilla will be back home and enjoying the spacious comforts of Highgrove, where he can disappear thankfully into his garden and she can be alone . . . at last.

Oh dear. No one told the Duchess of Cornwall just how suffocating life at sea in a relatively confined space with the Prince of Wales was going to be.

She returns from their Caribbean tour a wiser, but somewhat disillusioned, woman.

It certainly wasn't the smiling and curious West Indian islanders who were to blame. In fact, they turned out in considerable numbers to see the woman who replaced Diana.

Nor was the problem the choppy sea, though we know now that in addition to being a bad flier, Camilla's not much of a sailor either. And it wasn't the 85C heat, from which she had to retreat at lunchtimes to rest.

So, what could be the problem? Surprisingly, it is their marriage, which reaches its third anniversary on April 9.

Certainly, Camilla is happy enough, and the love that kept her and Charles together over more than three decades and through both of their failed marriages, remains strong.

But the Duchess is said to feel "a great sense of frustration" that, against all predictions and expectations, she has, in the words of a good friend, "failed to make Charles more relaxed and contented."

Being at sea, constantly together in the confined space of a yacht, only served to magnify the problem.

"He's difficult enough to live with when they can disappear into their own space at home," sighed one close figure, "but at sea it's been a nightmare."

Sounds like he’s going to worry himself to death over whether he’ll ever sit on the throne.

I’m sure his mother finds that very flattering. The subtext of his worry seems to be, “Die already, Mom!”

I hope she outlives him.

If it makes you feel better, she will actually never be Queen, even if Charles is crowned King.

I'd only bet that way if you get really long odds against it.

He deserves that shrew, and she deserves him. 85C (lol) will feel like a cold snap to them some day.
