CARSON, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) —The Seattle Seahawks evidently have cut ties with star running back Shaun Alexander.
The Seahawks have released Alexander, according to a report Tuesday by the NFL Network.
The 2005 league MVP, Alexander has been hampered by a variety of injuries over the last two seasons.
Alexander, 30, is recovering from offseason wrist surgery and underwent a physical this week. The all-time rushing leader in Seahawks franchise history, Alexander appeared in 13 games - 10 starts - last season, rushing for just 716 yards and four touchdowns.
Those numbers constituted Alexander’s lowest rushing and scoring totals since his rookie season in 2000. It also marked the second straight season that Alexander missed significant time since signing a $62 million contract in March 2006.
The Seahawks indicated their intention to cut ties with Alexander earlier this offseason when they brought in free agent running back Julius Jones, who signed a four-year deal on March 7.
A three-time Pro Bowler, Alexander arguably was the NFL’s most productive running back over a five-year stretch from 2001-05, rushing for at least 1,175 yards and scoring at least 16 touchdowns every season during that stint.
Alexander capped that run in 2005 with the best season of his career when he ran for 1,880 yards and 27 TDs, an NFL single-season record at the time.
But after signing the eight-year contract which made him the richest running back in NFL history, Alexander struggled with injuries during the 2006 campaign, rushing for 896 yards while missing six games to nurse a broken foot.
The 19th overall draft selection in 2000, Alexander has spent his entire eight-year career with Seattle, rushing for 9,429 yards and 100 TDs.
The Seahawks signed Julius Jones from the Cowboys for a pretty decent contract. Jones has been a disappointment the last couple of years, but he might bloom under the right circumstances. I hate to see Alexander get cut at 9500 yards. I would have liked to have seen him hit the 10,000 club.
Part of his signing bonus was really a reward for the years he was considerably under paid. RBs that have a power style of running and take lots of hits don’t last long.
Won’t take anything away from Giants with only 1 pro bowler picked. They played as a team and did everything they needed to do to win through the playoffs and superbowl. Great organization. Plus they utterly embarrassed the Patriots and beat the crap out of Brady. How sweet is it.

He’s been the best OT in the league for years now. 7 damn pro-bowls for a OT is amazing in itself. OT’s have a very short shelf life.
A year or two ago, Walter Jones was listed as the 2nd highest paid player in the NFL after Peyton Manning. The 3rd-highest paid player was Matt Hasselbeck.
I believe the Giants SB win will have a significant effect on the draft this weekend in that pass rushing DEs and LBs will move up in the draft even if they're one-dimensional. When you can stack 4 legitimate pass rushers up in the front 7, you're always in the game--as my beloved G-men proved.

As a NY Football Giants fan, I look forward to next weeks draft. I’m sure their very talented GM Reese will continue to make selections that will fit into their championship rosters. 7 of his 8 picks last year played a valuable role in their championship run.
As for Alexander, a very good player, not a hall of famer. A lot like Tiki Barber in that regard. Although Barber went out near his peak and Alexander is several steps slower than he was when he ran for 1880 yards.

Yeah but there has to be a cap hit for this year since these contracts do have bonus money that gets spread out. If you cut the guy then I believe that you eat all of his remaining unallocated bonus coin.
The beat the Pats on what amounted to a phenominal catch and during the play a choke hold on the Pats’ D-lineman that the refs missed but SI showed inadvertantly. That and the Pats DBs couldn’t hold onto a few pick offs that Manning was trying to serve up.
The two teams had played each other only 5 weeks earlier where the Pats won by a whopping 3 points. Tough game the first meeting, tough game the second meeting.
Yeah but there are going to be 3 guys taken on the O-line in the top ten. And, a team with a smash running attack will grind down a team with a speed D-line. 275 lbs doesn’t hold up against 310 lbs plus for 30 plus running plays.
It always depends on the match ups, execution and coaching plan from week to week.
And while I agree that they are talented, I don't think there's THAT much difference in talent level among, say, the top 20 teams in the NFL. Sure--there are the Bradys, the Tomlinsons, etc., that are clearly elites, but it is the intangibles, the moment that a team truly comes together that seems to make the difference.

You’re right the talent level is very close in the NFL. And they did tackle great.
A 310 pound OT who can do the 40 in 4.6 will always be sought after...Jake Long is still the top guy in this draft. And, me being a Wolverine, could not make me happier. We should have 2 or even three in the first round (Manningham being the second guy in the round).
