ABILENE, Texas A 7-year-old boy died after he was apparently attacked by two pit bulls along a road, and deputies summoned to the scene had to shoot the dogs before they could reach him, authorities said.
A driver saw Tanner Joshua Monk lying beside a road near Breckenridge on Sunday with two dogs nearby, Stephens County Sheriff Jim Reeves said. She got out of the car to help him, but the dogs became aggressive so she called 911, he said.
Two sheriff's deputies who came to the scene shot the dogs to death when they also became aggressive toward them. The deputies then found that Tanner was dead, Reeves said in Monday's edition of the Abilene Reporter-News.
Tanner was found alone about 150 yards from his house and 50 to 75 yards from a neighbor's house where he had been playing with some friends, Reeves told The Associated Press on Monday. The two pit bulls, along with two others seized at the scene by law enforcement, belonged to those neighbors, Reeves said.
No one was arrested Sunday. Reeves said evidence probably will be presented to a grand jury following an autopsy on the boy and tests on the dogs that were killed. Apparently no one saw what happened on the road north of Breckenridge, about 125 miles west of Dallas, he said.
Child Protective Services is investigating the boy's family for possible neglectful supervision, spokesman Paul Zimmerman said Monday. He said the family had no prior history with the agency, which is required to investigate child deaths.
It was the second serious pit bull attack on a child in four days in Texas.
On Wednesday in Fort Worth, a woman's two pit bulls attacked her 2-year-old niece as she was preparing to give the child a bath, police said. The little girl was critically injured, and her aunt also was injured as she lay over the child trying to protect her, police said.
Animal control officers later euthanized the dogs.
I know some defend this breed, but....it seems like it’s ALWAYS pit bulls when you read or hear about a dog attack any more.
I am so damned tired of pit bulls doing these attacks.Pretty tired of people rationalizing why they own these animals too.
Poor little thing, how heartbreaking. He must have been terrified.
Rabid wolverines make excellent pets too, you know.
You just have to train them!!!

I'm with you. These are war dogs and should be treated as such. I'm not for wiping them out. They have their uses. But they should only be kept by the military and law enforcement and under close supervision. I think that they are magnificent animals but they have been bread for a purpose. I do not fault them for what is in their nature,
they should only be kept by the military and law enforcement.....................Some people say the same thing about guns...........!
Guns are incapable of independent action.
So are dogs if kept restrained. The owner of those dogs will face manslaughter charges under the law and they should be. I am no fan of pitbulls, but, they are the tool of thier master and they are responsible for this childs death and should be prosecuted accordingly.
why anyone would keep them around with young children is INSANE and borders on criminal activity..
that goes for any animal that might pose danger....other dog breeds, ferrets,etc....
Restrained dogs can and do still try to free themselves. Powerful and aggressive breeds can get through remarkably stout fences. I have never heard of a firearm trying to force its way out of its safe.
There are some nice pit bulls, but most seem to be owned by thugs and lowlifes who want to scare people with their dogs. Even if they’re not actually training them to fight, to they encourage aggressive behavior and virtually never get them spayed or neutered.
There are a couple of pit bull owners in the apartment buildings immediately adjacent to my part time residence. Both the dogs are neutered males, very well behaved, and I’ve never seen them except when they were attached to a mature and responsible adult by a short, strong leash. I even let one of them “kiss” me on the cheek once. I can see why these particular owners love their dogs, but they aren’t typical pit bull owners. I know one of the dogs was a rescue from an animal shelter, and suspect both were. But no way would I ever get one. Their jaws are just SO powerful.
EXCELLENT point.
Call the cops!!!

Ping for later...
I know many pit bull owners. I don't know if they're typical. Obviously, I know what kind of "typical owner" you're referring to. They are the ones that end up on the news or in the paper.
Yes, I love my dog, and as he runs up against the end of his natural life, having provided selfless companionship and love for my two kids, I just solemnly try to make his last weeks as comfortable as possible.
He's earned it.
I’m going to guess from the rate at which your knee is jerking that you are either a current or former owner of a Pit Bull or similar breed.
I’m not in favor of banning any of those things, or pit bulls either. I do agree with the other poster that the public at large has heretofore shown that it is incapable of properly managing pit bulls and other aggressive dog breeds, and that there probably need to be controls on the ownership of such animals. All of those other items you listed require positive action on behalf of the owner to be dangerous, and in all cases except the SUV the only danger is to the owner themselves. Further, there have been no documented crimes involving any .50 caliber weapon that was legally and privately owned (and I don’t believe there have been any crimes involving illegal .50s either). As to large SUVs, there is very little that is inherent in the design of a large SUV that makes it intrinsically dangerous. The only cases where SUVs are dangerous is when they are involved in collisions with “social engineering” vehicles (i.e. those vehicles manufacturers must produce to counterbalance the gas mileage of the vehicles the market actually wants to buy, which tend to be flimsy, small, and underpowered). Of your list, only pit bulls are known to kill innocents without any action on the part of their owner or the innocent victim.
Tell me then how bad they are when they protect thier owner from being killed by a bear, even if the owner killed the bear with his bare hands and a pocket knife. Let me know and I will try and dig the story up. One of our very own FReepers.
