I mean, damn, I read that this sort of thing had happened at the time, but I was of the impression the seizures were sporadic abuses, and not an official systematic government policy of terror. So excuse me for a second while I ponder, on this day celebrating American independence from tyrannical abuses, the threat our own government poses to us, and contrast that against the trust we endow our government with, especially as related to the provision of security against supposedly the most mortal of threats. Always bear in mind that, in the sum of history, orders of magnitude more people have been killed by their own erstwhile benevolent governments than by external foes. The shift from a relatively free society to a totalitarian one can occur in a single day.
I sincerely fear the government more than any foreign enemy, and this arbitrary disarming of law-abiding citizens underscores why.
Since Katrina 21 states have banned such seizures after disasters.
I have not seen one, however, which made explicit the right and duty of citizens to shoot robbers with badges.
Explicitly acknowledging such right and duty would make both citizens and cops safer, since it would help discourage the latter from doing anything stupid.
