Bomb Starts a Riot in Haifa – Another Cast From Train – 100 Persons Wounded

Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES. JERUSALEM, July 6.-Bombs, riots and police action in various parts of Palestine today resulted in at least twenty-three deaths and nearly a hundred less serious casualties.

Among the dead at Haifa is Tuvia Dounia, a brother-in-law of Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization. He slumped at the wheel of his automobile, a bullet in his heart, while police were clearing the streets during one of the worst riots in the history of that city.

The trouble at Haifa, Palestine’s chief port and the terminus of the Iraq pipeline, appears to have started at an Arab market near the central police station into which a bomb was thrown. The city was soon at the mercy of rioters and the police opened fire.

One account says Mr. Dounia and three Jewish companions riding in his automobile near the scene of the bomb explosion were killed by a group of Arabs who thought them responsible for the outrage. A fifth passenger in the car was reported seriously wounded.

Actually it is not known who was responsible for the original bombing of the café that started the rioting.

Here the Haifa casualties are officially stated to have included eighteen Arabs and four Jews killed and sixty persons seriously injured.

This afternoon while a train was passing a grade crossing at Tel Aviv a bomb was thrown from one of the cars into a crowd waiting at the crossing gates. It killed a Jewish girl, Sara Kovlin, seriously injured an old man and less seriously injured five others.

Last night a British soldier and a Jewish supernumerary policeman were wounded in an engagement with 120 armed Arabs on the pipeline near Beisan. Nine of the Arabs were killed.

Another armed Arab was killed during an attack by his band on Affule in the plain of Esdraelon.

Four Arabs were sentenced to death today by a military court for attempted arson yesterday at the Lydda Airport. One sentence, however, was commuted to life imprisonment.
