We are investigating the issue with the MS update KB951748. For the time being we suggest you uninstall KB951748 until the issue has been resolved. We will post when we have more information

There are a lot of Freepers running various Linux Distros....

Download a Live Cd version and look at it....For Web browsing with Firefox,...will look like what you have already.

Holy flipping, god damn it. I spent most of the last 20 hours dealing with this for several family members.>/i>

I spent about ten minutes confirming that ZoneAlarm was blocking the internet, figured it was associated with an update, uninstalled ZA, and will wait it out. It will be fixed in a few days and I will reinstall.

I guess you don’t recognize sarcasm when you see it.

I’m seriously interested in a ‘MSI Wind’, the Linux version. Anyone real familiar with that OS to give this beginner an idea of what it’s like on a daily basis?

The MSI Wind uses a version of Linux called SUSE. It's a German distro and from what I've read about it's rock solid. I bought a Linux preloaded computer from Dell My favorite use so far is the graphics manipulation. I've used it to make my own additions to Pookies Toons which ran for many years here on FreeRepublic.

The few problems I've had were easy to resolve because many Linux users are hard core geeks and like to troubleshoot problems just for kicks, and they do so on easy to use forums. (I even stirred up a little trouble recently on one thread claiming it "wasn't political" and clearly was.)

This had me pulling my hair out this afternoon until I found the answer. Good thing I had a laptop that doesn’t have Zone Alarm but our two desktops were down hard. Everything is fine now after I uninstalled the patch and disabled automatic windows updates.

Since then, I've actually unistalled my Zone Alarm and am existing right now on the less than stellar Windows XP firewall.

Sounds like a big "mission accomplished" from microsoft.

Get a KVM switch and a second low end box for web browsing with Linux....

Back in 98 or so I used to do that using the Red Hat box to allow both machines (Win 98) using NAT to surf. There was a an IP tables modification on the web that you could copy. I was lucky enough to have an early enough installation of Verizon DSL, so they gave me a static IP. They took that away a few years later.

Everything is fine now after I uninstalled the patch and disabled automatic windows updates.

Rule #1 of striving for a smooth uneventful relationship with a M-soft OS: Never ever under any circumstances, have automatic updates turned on.

Bookmark for later, from vacation. When I get back I will open up FRee Republic on my Mac, find the thread, and follow the instructions.

Thanks for posting the how-to!

Cheers!

Shell we start a pool to guess the time to the first “Buy a Mac,” response?

Wouldn't matter.  Those that it would be most appropriately aimed at can't get on line right now to read it.

Curious, my $600 PC is working fine.

Yeah, this is probably all a made up story...
