Sent to jail by a judge who said he didn’t believe she had owned up to her involvement in steroids and a check-cashing scheme, track star Marion Jones has now turned to a different kind of judge - President Bush.

I think it is crazy that our tax money was wasted on prosecuting Ms. Jones. The USOC could have easily sanctioned her within the governing rules of her particular sport without the government having gotten involved in it.

Aren't there real criminals that deserve prosecution instead?

Unfortunately I don’t think she should be pardoned, but I also don’t think she should do time. She should do massive community service and clean up her life.

The entire BALCO investigation was nothing more than a huge waste of taxpayer dollars. I don't see doped up athletes going and committing violent crimes en masse against innocent bystanders. If these athletes suffer ill effects as a result of doping, then oh well, Darwin is at work.

I still believe that law enforcement should go after real criminals who actually pose a threat to the general public.

"Was Bill Clinton jailed for lying under oath? His lying deeds were far greater than some game sport."

He was impeached by the House -- and had his ass saved by the Democrats and too many Republicans in the Senate..

That impeachment did enough damage to Clinton, considering he way ONLY lying about sex. Right?

This skanks cheating and subsequent lying about it -- sullied the Olympics and denied the rightful winners of EARNED glory and MILLIONS of dollars in endorsements.

Wow! Lemme see if I understand you: ON NET, Marion Jones did worse damage to the Republic than Bill Clinton?

At one point, this skank hired a Klintoon propagandist PR man, I’ve read (sorry, I forgot the details) to attack the reputations of motives of her accusers. Pardon her, shore!

Why do you pose this as an either/or? It is not as though there was a murder or bank robbery that went unprosecuted so that they could bring Jones to justice.

Really think so? Then you probably believe that government resources are costless, an idiot position.

If you’re so concerned about Jones’ inequities, in a truly free society you could contribute personally to the lawyers of those suing her. Would you?

I suppose if one is comfortable with folks who cheat, lie to their fans and the Grand Jury and commit fraud — denying folks who “play by the rules” their fairly won rewards, then is was a waste of time to go after Olympic or Professional athletes who cheat or lie to Grand Juries....

Standards have been lowered enough....
We needn't lower them any further.

What damage? He's making hundreds of millions of dollars a year in speaking fees and corporate kick-backs and gets VIP treatment wherever he goes. The taxpayer is still stuck with a lifetime salary and security and all of the other perks of a rock star.

No, Willie's lying was far worse than the athelete's lies. The cheating of an athelete is a civil matter, not a matter of Congress.

oh quiet......this woman has trained to be one of the best female athletes in the world, and the steroids helped her but the steroids didn't do the running, the lifting, the proper eating, the proper stretching, etc....

forgive her Mr. President and commute her sentence....

there must be a zillion more people in our country alone worthy of going to jail and having a felony on her record....a zillion...

Just remember — Willy STILL has Hillary pulling his chain...
There aren’t enough millions to compensate for that sentence.

They MUST remain married to protect themselves from being called to testify against each other.....

Oh, quiet? -- Are you going to give me a rational reason for suppressing my freedom of opinion? Or is this turning into a "turn the black girl loose" because "there's already too many black girls in prison" discussion? You must have been sneaking into the Kool-aid!

She is a perjurer - a liar - a fraud - and a thief - and a cheat in the most prestigious sports arena!.
She IS a self confessed Felon..
Lets not forget about the check fraud scheme....
Lets not forget she burned through MILLIONS that were honestly meant for those who did not cheat.

But, you're close about the "zillion" people worthy of jail and having a felony on her record -- and MANY of them are already in PRISON... That's exactly who lives there. And, she rightfully belongs there with them....

Before the sentencing, Jones broke down as she asked Judge Karas not to send her to prison. “I plead with you to alleviate the situation by not separating me from my boys, even for a short period of time,” she said.

But Karas noted that “athletes in society ... serve as role models to children around the world. When there is a widespread level of cheating, it sends all the wrong messages.”

“People live with their choices,” he added, “and the choice not to play by the rules has been compounded by the choice to break the law.”

Marion Jones’ Teammates Paying for Her Crime
Posted Apr 11, 08 9:42 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – The consequences of Marion Jones’ doping offenses reached further yesterday when the International Olympic Committee laid down the law and stripped her former relay teammates of their medals—this after Jones’ was stripped of hers late last year. The runners, with Jones, won gold in the 4x400-meter relay and bronze in the 400 relay at the 2000 Olympic Games.

“The decision was based on the fact that they were part of a team, that Marion Jones was disqualified from the Sydney Games due to her own admission that she was doping during those games,” said IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies. The next IOC board meeting is this June in Athens, where the matter will likely be discussed further.

On the check fraud charge:

But the real break in the case against her came because of a check fraud ring. Marion’s ex-boyfriend, Tim Montgomery was the first of the two to be caught partaking in the check forgery scheme. They became involved in 2005, when a drug dealer told them they could make easy money by cashing some big checks for some of his associates. Montgomery made at least $20,000 from cashing these checks, which turned out to be from a ring of check counterfeiters.

Montgomery recruited others to help cash the checks, including his track coach Steve Riddick and his agent Charles Wells. Marion deposited a $25,000 check into her bank account. The check fraud scheme was quickly discovered by bank investigators.

But it looked at first like Marion might escape prosecution. When criminal charges were filed against Montgomery and several others, Marion Jones was not named. Her name was even excluded from court records, and she was just referred to as a “close associate of Timothy Montgomery.”

Montgomery pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy, and could get up to three years in prison. Wells pleaded guilty to bank fraud. Riddick was convicted of conspiracy, bank fraud and money laundering in May. Marion’s time finally came, and the result was Friday’s guilty plea.

Marion’s guilty plea could get her a maximum of 10 years in prison, 6 years on parole, and $500,000 in fines. However, the prosecutors have agreed to a sentencing agreement that would mean Jones would serve zero to six months in jail. The judge isn’t required to abide by the agreement, though.

In my opinion - Jones got off too easy...
The skank got the minimum sentence.

It seems she was to arrogant to ever think about getting a job - or doing ANYTHING honest...
She apparently lied and cheated everyone.
Even her teammates will lose THEIR medals because Jones as a relay team member CHEATED.

While I understand that lying under oath is a serious crime, I believe that the circumstances surrounding the crime, i.e., Ms. Jones’ drug use, did not merit a grand jury investigation, a trial, or incarceration. She should have been punished by the governing body of her particular sport and that should have been the end of it.

Well, clearly we disagree over the severity of CHEATING in an OLYMPIC sport -— involving HONOR among AMATEURS...in the spirit of the original Greek games..

The games have already been bastardized by commercial interests — lets not compound the problem by “forgiving” cheats.

To forgive her - would be another lowering of standards to include those who don’t belong in the sport or out of prison. The OIC decided she SHOULD be punished and ordered the return of all medals from Jones and the TEAM members who ran with her.... She has also been ordered to return all prize money....

THEN — how about the Check Scam to which this skank also pleaded guilty?
Should she avoid prison for stealing from folks?

First, she steals glory and millions in endorsements from the TRUE winners of the Medals -— then, still too lazy or arrogant to get a job, she steals directly from strangers with her check scam.

Sorry......She is a no class skank and has lived far above her true station in life. A leach.... A thief...and a Liar before a Federal Grand Jury.

Well, clearly we disagree over the severity of CHEATING in an OLYMPIC sport ...

I honestly could not care less about people who cheat at privately-sanctioned sporting events, at least in the sense that the government should be the supreme governing body for any major sport. There is already a private governing body for Ms. Jones' sport, and Ms. Jones should have been punished for cheating by that authority alone without the government getting involved.

THEN — how about the Check Scam to which this skank also pleaded guilty?

Since that's a real crime with actual victims, then by all means she should be punished by the government for this crime. But cheating at sports? Sure it is dishonorable, but the government, in my opinion, has more important things to deal with than that.
