Report: Networks Gave Obama the Nomination
Newsmax ^ | August 20, 2008 | Jim Meyers

An exhaustive, eight-year Media Research Center study of the Big Three TV networks’ coverage of Barack Obama shows that their favorable spin on the Democrat gave him his margin of victory in the primaries, according to MRC president Brent Bozell.

The MRC notes that this year saw the closest nomination contest in a generation, with just one-tenth of a percentage point — 41,622 votes out of more than 35 million cast — separating Obama from Hillary Clinton when the Democratic primaries ended in June.

“But Barack Obama had a crucial advantage over his rivals this year: the support of the national media, especially the three broadcast networks,” an MRC report on the study states.

“At every step of his national political career, network reporters showered the Illinois Senator with glowing media coverage, building him up as a political celebrity and exhibiting little interest in investigating his past associations or exploring the controversies that could have threatened his campaign.”

Hillary will not be amused. And, FWIW, she has every right to be pi$$ed.

If Jeremiah Wright would have reared his ugly head before Iowa, rather than just before PA, Obama would have been a nonstarter.

When the media sell a candidate to sell a story, the candidate for POTUS, then it is time for the American people to revolt against the media. As Jesus turned the moneychangers’ tables in the temple, we need to turn the dial, cancel the subscription, surf to a new site. This is not a matter of journalism, it is a sales job - and not even for what they think is right, but what will sell.

Are they sure they don’t mean 8 MONTH? How could there be an eight year study?

Maybe the group has been around for eight years.

It took a hundred times the positive coverage to gain that one-tenth of one percentage point edge.

Wonder why they even thought to tail this guy for eight years? Did they see the Obama love-fest blooming?

I wonder about the following types of things here:

Does the news media have too much power? Do they use their power to influence events and people’s perceptions?

Are we too sheep like and lap up whatever the MSM puts out there? Hardly anybody here has anything good to say about Obama in spite of all the great coverage he has gotten. Maybe people at Free Republic actually think for themselves, or can see through the media created aura that surrounds Obama, and aren’t influenced by it?

Does the media have an obligation to be more fair and balanced?

Does the MSM get too invested in their templates and story lines? For example, Obama’s win in Iowa showed that he could win in a largely white state, and also punctured Hillary’s balloon of inevitability. These are media perceptions; after Iowa and New Hampshire, only 1% of the nation’s voters had weighed in with their votes or caucus attendance. Maybe we all get too influenced by early primaries and the MSM narrative.

bottom line - everybody think for yourself. I know everyone here does, but it’s good to remind ourselves that God gave us our brains, and we should use them.

Can't say I have much sympathy for her. She and William had the press in their pocket every time they ran against R's. Now she knows what if feels like to be an R in every election. You know that you opponent has $500,000,000 of free advertising coming from the old media.

“The Alexandria, Va.-based MRC logged every story, sound bite, and mention of Obama on ABC, CBS and NBC evening news telecasts from his first appearance on a network broadcast in May 2000 through the end of the Democratic primaries this past June — a total of 1,365 stories.”

The article is interesting. Politicians are usually groomed by the party, no?

The 3 networks, seen by everyone, even those without CABLE, like me. I wish FoxNews would at least put on an evening national news program. I wish someone would create a conservative basic tv network. Are liberals richer than conservatives?

If when he was born in Kenya, Obama’s mother could realize that some day he would want to be President of the United States and therefore faked his birth in Hawaii, then eight years ago Brent Bozell could also realize that Obama would move from the Illinois House to the US Senate, and then try for the White House. We should thank G_D and Brent for his prescience. /s/

>> Does the media have an obligation to be more fair and balanced?

That’s a darn good question.

IMO the short answer is “no”. It’s an un-nuanced “no” for any form of media that is freely open to competitors (e.g. newsprint).

It may be a nuanced “no” in the case of broadcast media, where there are a limited number of broadcast channels and the government controls who gets access.

Advancing technology is rendering the “limited spectrum” issue moot, though. Satellite radio, cable, etc. will soon provide /essentially/ unlimited spectrum, and will soon be available to essentially everyone, so they’re open to competition and all viewpoints will be heard.

I hope and fervently believe that once the more sensible and workable ideas of conservatism are truly available to all, liberalism will atrophy and die out. Liberalism just doesn’t compete well in a free marketplace of ideas. It /needs/ a slanted propaganda machine to survive.

There was ZERO downside to the propagandists support of Barack. First, it got them out from under the covers with/of Clinton Inc. Second, even if Barack loses to McCain, they can continue to run the racism/victim template against their ideological opponents and continue to act like advocates for the downtrodden. Third, if Barack wins, it validates the power of the propagandist, and they each remain a valuable entity in their twisted minds.
