The Atlantic coast seems to be out of danger but we should keep an eye on this storm just the same. Apparently they didn't give names to hurricanes in 1938 so I took the liberty . . .

Satellite data was severely limited and computer modeling was lousy, so they maybe didn't have quite the predictive capability as they do today.

Pittsburgh is holding on to their 3 1/2 game lead with under two weeks to go.

The storm in the story is known as "The Long Island Express," or "The Great New England Hurricane."

The death toll for the storm was 682. It was the fourth hurricane of the 1938 season. My mother and her sister remember refrigerators and rooftops floating in the Great South Bay during the eye of the storm.

The Great South Bay is a body of water between the central southern coast of Long Island and the barrier island known as Fire Island.
