Opportunity Lost (pure vanity)
Vanity | 9/26/08

While the debate about the debate (first presidential) rages on, let me suggest how McCain wasted a huge opportunity to put Obama away once and for all. When the debate turned to Obama bashing the Repubs' record, esp. "how the Repubs single-handedly ruined the economy," McCain should have said:

"Senator Obama, speaking of records, why are yours sealed? Your college record? Your state legislative record? Your record of 'community organization' meetings chaired by both you and William Ayers, a self-confessed terrorist? Your law school records? My record has been dissected for decades. Yours remains hidden. What don't you want the public to know about you?"

Alas, an opportunity to destroy Obama not taken.

The Pubbies and Bush’s overrated so-called political genius Rove made the same mistake with Kerry and his record of traitorous alliance with the N. Vietnamese. Only the Swifties saved us from that scumbag. Are there any independent groups who will bring out the truth about 0bama?

I find it impossible to believe that Obama has somehow threatened into silence everyone who knew him at Columbia (and perhaps in Arabia during his junior year abroad). Or his time living in NY with at least eight different people. Or his time at Harvard Law on an AA acceptance. Yet no one has come forward. THAT’s scary. How are Obama’s minions keeping the lid on? There has to be a trail of his coercion and threats. Perhaps some patriots will soon come forward with the information. Conservative candidates’ SSNs and personal info are routinely outed by Libs, yet not once from Lib records? How is this possible?

Good point - how about the birth certificate - why not clear up that little item?

BO is surrounded by very frightening and powerful people.

I am certain intimidation is the keystone to his campaign and if he becomes president, I can’t bring my mind to pursue the topic farther than a few seconds.

I had been thinking that McCain has an excellent opposition research group and that they know all about Obama’s neo-Marxist bio.

Now, not so sure at all.

They can’t even address the Community Reinvestment Act and ACORN in the most important time, last night?

I wonder if the MSM would like to contribute 7 billion to clear up the debt for the people of the nation?

That number must be peanuts to them combined for all the filled airtime they are getting.

The situation with the failure of the government isn’t surprising at all when these monstrous financial genius’ are directing traffic - and have been doing so for years.

And our government have followed.

McCain could have PUT HIM AWAY in the first 5 minutes but did not. Obama left himself open for a right cross to the jaw when he spoke of being in this mess due to 8 years of failed Republican trickle down policies. McCain should have nailed him and directly set out how the Carter / Clinton / Frank / Dodds CRA forced this economic disaster on us and how he tried to save us by co-sponsoring a bill to prevent it. He never specifically addressed it. He needs to name names next time as he has repeatedly said he will do. Well, do it, John! And give yourself some specific credit rather than being Mr. Nice Guy and speaking in generalities. The American public is largely too ignorant to undertand these things without being spoon fed because they have not researched the facts.

I agree. There were plenty of hanging curveballs. Unfortunately though the Bush admin has left the RP with little credibility.

How did John McCain vote on the Community Reinvestment bills?

I have not been able to find how McCain voted on the CRA, but for the sake of time and argument, I do know McCain said this in the Senate record May of 2006:

“Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.

The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.

For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs—and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.”

The Dems killed it.

Quick Info
S. 190 [109th]: Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005
Last Action: Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Ordered to be reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute favorably.
Status: Dead

McCain should hammer this and hammer this in detail.
