Sorry about the cut-and-paste, ransom note headline, but the sports headlines go across the whole top of the page.

As my college football sample I decided to follow Army, Navy, Notre Dame, and California. The cadets and midshipmen on those teams are members of the classes of '39, '40, and '41, for the most part. They are going to have their work cut out for them shortly after graduation. Notre Dame seems to have universal appeal. And Homer's boss (Mr. Burns?) is a Cal grad and big Bears fan. This presents Homer with a good suck up opportunity to email the boss articles about a glorious past.

The picture at the end is supposed to be Coach Bert Bell, but I'm pretty sure it's Mike Ditka.

In a game which wasn’t mentioned, USC beat Washington State 19-6 in the LA Coliseum—the Trojans’ third win in a row since dropping the season opener to Alabama.

The Domers and Bears will be playing the Trojans on the road later in the year, so watch out!

I'd have liked to see a picture of Yale's coach, Ducky Pond.

Sorry I didn’t add USC to the list of regulars. I thought about it. Well, the two you named will be covered plus maybe a bowl game. I have collected all the stories through November 24.

Good catch. That is a very important detail I missed.

I also missed that I whacked off a chunk of the Army-Harvard story.

Interesting side-note: one of Ducky Pond's assistant coaches for the game reported here was none other that Gerald Ford! Ford coached at Yale for four seasons, 1937-40.

Here's a pic of Coach Ford (L), who had hair in those days:

You learn something every day....

80 pages to teach me how to watch a football game? I can teach you how to drink beer and make the wife mad in... well, one post.

79 pages cover how not to make the wife mad.

Coach Howard Jones’s Trojans appear to be vastly improved over the mediocre teams of the past four years. In about three weeks, they will attempt to snap a two-game losing streak against UC Berkeley. In the final game of the season, on December 3, the Trojans will be seeking revenge for last year’s loss to Notre Dame in South Bend.

The Rose Bowl could be an exciting game. USC, which beat Ohio State a week and a half ago and and has won two conference games, hopes to earn its first trip to Pasadena in six years, but some tough matches are coming up. On Saturday, the Trojans travel to Palo Alto to play Stanford, which has beaten them in four of the last five games.
