When I was in school, I was taught that socialists wanted the state to operate facilities like the phone service, postal service, etc. which were funded in some measure by taxpayer moneys; communists wanted to take over businesses that had been built by other people.
Since then, it seems that 'socialist' has been redefined to mean 'communist, but we can't really admit it'.
