gun advice (vanity)
me

Posted on 11/05/2008 7:44:40 PM PST by Westchester

First-time poster with honest question. I'm buying a shotgun for home defense and hunting purposes should the need for survival arise soon (have numerous rifles already but no shotgun).

But it's been a LONG time since I've been around a shotgun and I have several extremely basic questions. First, will the Mossberg 500 do me fine for the two purposes above or do I need to upgrade to the 535 because it can use up to 3 1/2 inch? Second, what's the difference and why do I need to care? Keep in mind I only need it either to unload on an intruder or to kill birds and whatnot if I have no other food source.

The next question...I was in a hurry to buy ammunition tonight after the things I've read in the last 24 hours. WalMart has Federal 12-gauge shells, 2 3/4 inch, 8 shot for $4.67 a box so I bought a bunch of boxes just now. Is this usable stuff for the reasons I need it or should I make the next batch something different?

Thanks in advance for all your help. I know how enthusiastic about guns all of you out there are, but please bear in mind I need ONLY these questions answered. :)

Great thread here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2082856/posts

I prefer #00 buckshot for home defense. It WILL penetrate walls, as will anything powerful enough to reliably take down the adversary.

Remington 00 buck and slugs were $4.49 at WM yesterday.

Same item at Dick's $4.99 w/$2.00 rebate per box

A Winchester Defender but use #6 shot if you live in an apartment - it'll take the intruder down without passing into a neighbor’s apartment .... (taught at gun school) ....

A Mossy 500 or a Remington 870 will do you fine, both reliable, lots of options, etc.

I am getting one soon, as that is the only thing I am missing at the moment!

Vanity: Buy a Gun Day. 1/20/2009 every purchase is a vote for Liberty

LibertyVote to the right reverend
How about this, “2009 Year of the Firearm” please purchase on or before 1/20/2009 gift certificates maybe be effective starting 1/1/09. If we promote this big enough maybe we could show a “movement” created bump in firearms and ammo sales. Tell me this is not awesome:

buy a short barrel for home defense (18 1/2 inch Barrel) . Mossberg Maverick is a good buy, but I like the Persuader.

I’d get a Beretta SX3. It can fire 12 shots in 1.4 seconds.

I had a Mossberg P500- great shotgun;

however, i’d suggest you spend the extra money and get the Remington 870.

My husband says he is going to load up on ammo. Said that is how Cook County got rid of the small gun shops, that there are zero in Cook County now. Taxing the heck out of ammo, suing the small owners.

Get the Remington 870. It is a great all around shotgun. If you are serious about using it for different purposes, buy it with a barrel and the appropriate chokes for game and then buy a short barrel for home defense.

I have a 500 that is probably 30 years old. I hunted ducks and geese on the gulf coast in salt water. It worked flawlessly. It isn’t the prettiest shotgun but it is quite reliable. Still shoot skunks and coyotes.

I am the son of a gun dealer.

I know guns for the most part

If you want a shotgun for home defense...here is what I suggest.

Mossberg 500, Remington 870.

I prefer the Remingtons...they have a better stock :).

Both are pumps. Both you can toss into a mud swamp and will still rack a shell. Both are cheap as shotguns go.

You don’t need 3 1/2 inch for home defense. A 12 ga with 2 3/4 or 3-inch chamber is all you need. Even a 20 ga is probably good. You can hold more shots under 3 1/2 chamber and it is more than enough at room size encounters. The #1 buck rounds in 12 ga are highly recommended since they have more pellet frontal area than any other load while having adequate, over 12-inch penetration. Myself, I use either slugs or 3-inch 00-buck. I have more bear problems (many every year) than crook problems (never in Colorado, but Florida is a different story) and load for the worse case bear confrontation.

Remington 870 Tactical Magnum with SpecOps Recoil Reducing Stock is what you want for home defense. 18” factory barrel, pistol grip, 4 stage stock, 6+1 capacity, and is perfectly legal for civillians.

See it here:
