Marge and I watched this British procuction of the G.B. Shaw play over the weekend and we both enjoyed it. I liked it more than ‘My Fair Lady.’ But then I am not a big fan of sixties musicals. It is refreshing to hear, “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain, or, “I’ve grown accustomed to her face,” without the actors breaking into song. I didn’t verify this but this may be Leslie Howard’s last role before he became Ashley Wilkes.

As an aside, I wish I could read the landing points on the TWA route. I’m pretty sure that the one I see there is Albuquerque. I remember when I was a kid and TWA still flew into Albuquerque (before it was the Sunport and SWA). You still had to walk out to the plane and walk up the stairs on the truck.

Intermezzo: A Love Story.

U.S. release 9/22/39. I see GWTW didn't open in the U.S. until December 15. I thought it was earlier. I'll have to run the review of Intermezzo. Especially if there is nothing much happening in the news that month.

My first impression from that ad is that the artist had a problem with scale. It looks like either a tiny airplane about 20 feet over the waving cowpoke or a flying colossus high over the southwest.

It wasn't until a recent viewing of My Fair Lady that I realized that the movie Trading Places was also Pygmalion.

It was the scene in MFL where Col. Pickering bets Prof. Higgins that he could convert Eliza Doolittle into a Lady that reminded me of the scene where the Duke brothers reveal their $1 bet that they could turn petty thief Billy Ray Valentine into a Wall Street business man.

Of course, the stories diverge at some point, but the early similarity in plot stood out when I made the "bet" connection.

You are welcome. The movie reviews (and sports stories) are a nice respite from the grim news of this time.

I mean to ping the alphabet-movie guy to the reviews, but I keep forgetting. I finally remembered. I also went back and added the moviereview keyword to all of them over the weekend.

We have old copies of the New Yorker that we can check out at the library. It’s interesting to read about this time of our history in real time.

Here's tonight's offering from Campbell Playhouse Rebecca.

This is the last one till "A Christmas Carol" which will be presented on the 23rd. (I'm looking forward to that one.)
