Former electrical hardware firm vice president Simon Belsky says he was erroneously ticketed two years ago. The 63-year-old says the ticket cites his van for blocking a Brooklyn fire hydrant even though the only hydrant on the street was down the block.
Belsky was in court last week and is due back Feb. 2. He says if he wins he'll file a civil suit against the city to recover the $7,500 he's spent on legal work. He says if any compensation is awarded he'll donate it to educational programs.

That’s nothing. There’s this guy who got elected president who has spent perhaps 7 figures on a $10 issue.
You beat me to it, almost verbatim.
*LOL*
He has more money than brains and more principles than most.
It’s his money BUT the thing that bothered me was that he wanted to recover the $7,500. He would’ve gained a semblance of dignity if he didn;t have to file a civil suit JUST to recover the $7500, which leads to a first conclusion that it’s the “principal”.
Ah, the thrill and cost of a moral victory. Bill Handel would easily call this guy a SCHMUCK!
That doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it wouldn't even bother me if he wanted to recover some modest multiple of the amount he's spent. Its very difficult and expensive for a citizen to stand on principle against errors of state. If he succeeds, he deserves a bonus for the insult and his perserverance. Now, asking for $75 Million would bother me, but not a few tens of thousands.
But, how much did it cost the government (the taxpayers) to fight with him? Probably 10x that, good! I still call it a great moral victory.
I got a ticket for running a stop sign 10 feet from my driveway. I did NOT run the stop sign and wasted a vacation day so that I could fight it. I won!
Too many tickets get paid just so they don’t have to waste time and money AND the cities all know it!
Why does a citizen have to spend that much money to challenge a ticket?
