NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- After nearly a year of flagging sales, low gas prices and fat incentives are reigniting America's taste for big vehicles.
Trucks and SUVs will outsell cars in December, according to researchers at the automotive Website Edmunds.com, something that hasn't happened since February.

A few may have figured out you can’t put the freshly cut Christmas tree on the roof of a “Smart” car .... and expect to get home against a 10 mph wind. LOL
Well, I don’t know if that is wise for a lot of those folks. Those gas prices will be going back up before they quit driving those same vehicles...
You're probably right. But this doesn't bother me if it's not a return to fashion vehicles.
What I'd hope for is a trend to using less of petroleum products. Unfortunately, we've gotten not a trend but a hard smack of petroleum reality that's become a hard smack to our economy.

Americans deserve to be able to drive the vehicles of their choice without the algore or The One vetoing their chosen methods of transportation.
And the EPA just rated the Fusion Hybrid (4 cylinder) at 41 highway and 36 city. I've no reason to favor or disfavor hybrids but they seem to working out. I guess we'll see.
The new F150 is selling like hotcakes as folks trade in their older trucks for a newer more fuel efficient and feature filled model. If I was a contractor or anything else right now and needed a new truck , you better believe I’d be replacing my old one right now. The deals are there to be had.
Trucks are needed and sell no matter what, and the new F150 has been a absolute home run.
I can't complain about my Chevy Blazer either. It's a 2000 with over 120,000 miles and still gets a little over 21 MPG highway.
I wasn’t aware that Toyota offered a 4Runner hybrid. To my knowledge, the Highlander is the only one.
The NYT would be right about what has been the trend and in the fact that the automakers have much reduced the production of SUVs. If there is now a shorter term trend that will clear the lots of trucks and SUVs then good.

Well, they did get a little large with the latest Highlander. They’re having to backtrack and offer a 4 cyl. gas only model.
Ford is only offering deals on the 2008 trucks. No incentives (yet) on the 2009s, which are supposedly much, much improved over the 2008s.
If I needed a full size truck or SUV, it’s a great time to buy one. I don’t though, and neither do the majority of people. It’s not a good time to revert to form.
Enjoy the $1.50 gas while it lasts. It’ll be short-lived. Hang onto those high gas mileage commuter cars, if you’ve got a commute of any length.

Yes. And there is an ironic situation in play. If a truck is selling cheaply enough then it might be a good buy for a low mileage vehicle. Someone would have to run the numbers for their situation to see if this applies.

And the Iranians know it. Right now, we can't hurt them without hurting ourselves as much.
Well, sales have fallen for everything automotive, fuel efficient as well as not so efficient, with prices following suit. The math favors keeping a cheap mode of transportation, period. If you’ve got a Tahoe, and it’s paid for, that beats 60 months at even 0% interest, on a new Corolla. Combine a 50 mile commute with $4.00+ per gallon for gas, and that equation changed. Then, that changed, but it looks likely to change again.
I agree. But I wonder if cars haven't become like computers where you hate to buy today when there is always something better (maybe) just around the corner. I would like direct injection and a dual-clutch transmission, for instance.
