Colorado Division of Wildlife officers are searching the Boulder area for a mountain lion that grabbed a couple's Jack Russell Terrier late Christmas Eve outside their home ...
The owner had stepped outside with the small dog about 11 p.m. to take some garbage to the alley and told wildlife officers that she "got a creepy feeling," division spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said.
The woman ran back indoors, Churchill said, and accidentally left her dog outside. When the woman realized her pet wasn't with her, she got in her car, where she felt safer, and drove back into the alley with her lights on.
"When she drove into the alley, she saw the lion standing there with the dog in its mouth," Churchill said. "She honked her horn and flashed the lights."
But the lion ran through neighboring yards with the dog still in its jaws...

I have never seen a Jack Russel back down.......he was protecting his family. Good boy and RIP, saved your dumb owners life.
I lost my cat Elway several years ago when he accidentally got outside and he was never seen or heard from again.

I remember in ‘90 when a lion got a 65 pound springer spaniel in Colorado Springs... my first thought “Too fat to run, too stupid to fight.”
Nothing changes.
My friend neighbor lost their Newfoundland in Franktown Col to a mountain lion three years ago. Everyone thought another family member had let her in for the night.
If the tables were turned, that little dog wouldn't have abandoned her.
No dog of mine would be "accidentally left outside" to face possible death alone. The only reason I'd leave would be to get a weapon.
She probably freaked out and ran, then guilt got the best of her, imho.

Interesting about that “creepy feeling.” I’ve had it too and for the same reason. It’s kind of interesting how good ol’ Mister Shotgun makes the feeling go away.

Understood. I believe this lady lived because the little terrier was there, I could be wrong, of course. Big cats scare me, and any sensible human. A blocking dog can mean the difference between running, pulling your weapon or death. This lady had no weapon......then again this is an urban area.
I Don't mean to sound harsh, and I have always loved the little terriers.
A friend of mine has raised Jack Russell litters for over a decade. Bright, energetic, fierce little dogs, such a big heart. I’ve always been partial to Labs, myself, but those Jacks sure are fun. Especially at agility trials.

Old Jennifer has been busy in and around Boulder this year, they need to thin the cougar population.
No DNA that I know of but similar political views.
There is a political side to this mountain lion problem here in Colorado. The good voters took it upon themselves to regulate mountain hunting. When growing up there was hardly ever a report of mountain lions eating pets. They were hunted with dogs and they learned to avoid humans. Now we have a generation of lions with no fear.....and people have built their houses in prime lion country.....
Dogs and cats are easy meals.
We should empty Denver and Boulder of all liberals sending them out of state.
Then re-install the spring Bear hunting season.
