It's called lese-majeste you cannot be critical of the royal family.

Last 2 issues of the Economist they complained about the law of not being allowed to speak out against the royal family.

Sounds like the Economist should just say “Phuket.”

Thailand bans Economist magazine
Ah, back we go to days of yore,
To days when men were more,
When kings were met with knee to floor,
And critics shown the door.

Nor scribe nor text nor magazine
Shall venalize the king.
"We love 'im!", do the people sing,
"His critics up we string!"

Have you been to Thailand?

The King is deeply and sincerely genuinely loved by the people at all levels of the society.

It’s quite impressive and humbling to see his devotion to the people and their devotion to him.

Our presumed self-righteous idiots ruling the land here are currs by comparison.

Just reading the headline with no other information, this poster was thinking there’s really only one thing which could cause something like that:

Insulting the King.

Sure enough.

Thais are pretty amazingly libertarian about a lot of things, but they are quite loyal to the royal family.

I've never been to Thailand. I've never seen the king. I'm sure he's a fine fellow.

Doggerel is its own reward.

I lived in Thailand for six years and married a Thai. When you get to know Thais well, they may be more forthcoming about how they feel about the royal family.

The royal family is not hated (though some may be, eg, the Queen and Crown Prince, who may be passed over because of his character flaws). But the royal family is not as universally and unquestioningly praised as appears on the surface. Little real information about the royal family is available because of the lese majesty laws. Disussion about the royals’ private and corparate lives is always done very quietly and very privately.

Thailand is far from perfect.

However, this Thai King is authentic stuff reigning thoroughly in behalf of his people. The Queen is of similar character.

Honor to whom honor is due is fine with me.

I understand.

No. I’ve not spent that kind of time there. And I assumed it was not the whole story.

I thought the Queen was likewise diligent in behalf of the less fortunate. What’s her bad press about?

Thx.
