Nigel Haskett was working at a McDonalds in Arkansas last summer when he witnessed Perry Kennon, a criminal with a long record beating a woman. Mr. Haskett tackled Kennon, threw him out of the restaurant, and then stood by the door to prevent reentry. Kennon went to his vehicle, grabbed a gun and proceeded to shoot Nigel Haskett multiple times. Haskett staggered back into the McDonalds and collapsed. Haskett has had multiple surgeries and medical costs are at $300,000 and counting.
McDonalds has denied workers compensation benefits to Mr. Haskett.

Did Mr. Haskett have any other insurance?
I don’t think it’s McDonald’s call.
ironic, when mcdonald’s owner’s wife died,
she gave $2 billion to npr.
This makes one wonder if McDonald’s would have been happier if the woman being beaten had received no assistance from Mr. Haskett, and instead was bringing suit against McDonald’s for millions of dollars in damages?
The guy is a hero, and McDonald’s craps on him with it’s special sauce. Nice.
And welcome to FR.
Workman’s Compensation should cover everything including healthcare due to this incident that happened on the job.
I think you have to work there 4 1/2 years and appeal directly to the Kenyan Santa to get better benefits.
A career criminal is back on the streets, so who is really at fault?
I say the politically correct, pathetic lawmakers in this country who side with criminals and let them back on the street are at fault, not the weapon!
Mr. Haskett needs a really good attorney to challenge this ruling on Workman’s Comp...as long as this happened on McDonald’s property they should be responsible,,,,,any beating of another person on their property would be considered dangerous for employees, customers and others, who would know if it was personal or random at the time.
The upside is the chinese woman whose business was attacked by two robbers, and she showed them the end of her pistol causing them to flee..
You mean limited access to firearms.
I suspect that there is a policy that employees are not allowed to have firearms on the premises. Had Mr Haskett had a carry weapon, he might not have been shot at all.
Say what? I doubt the McDonald's employee had access to any firearms, I believe company policy forbids it for employees at work.
McDonalds, as a corporation, should be ashamed of themselves.
One of the downsides to unlimited access to firearms.
Also it’s more evidence of our being A nation of cowards when it comes to race.
911 wasn’t available???
My thoughts exactly! Thanks.
“The guy is a hero, and McDonalds craps on him with its special sauce.”
VERY well put.
Honestly I’m not so sure McDonalds is doing this. I did till I heard their attorney explain that the insurance company had denied the claim and that it was working it’s way through the courts.
The McDonalds attorney said the guy deserves his money and will get it in the end. That isn’t the sort of statement an attorney would make if he were fighting to avoid payment.
And some questions:
Was this a “corporate” McD’s or a franchise?
In many states, the employer contracts with a private insurance firm to provide the work comp coverage. However, that private company must follow federal and state law.
“Coordination of Benefits” rules are tricky.
Medicare and Medicaid, for instance, ROUTINELY deny claims if auto insurance, home owners insurance or work comp might be the “primary” insurance provider.
However, I think that work comp is USUALLY primary.
Agreed that this guy needs a good attorney.
However, don't bash McD’s just yet. I do not think that it is their call, at all.
