Avast anti-virus (free) is the bomb. Great program.

Sorry to post a vanity but I got the parite virus that somehow got on my laptop. I rarely use it for too much and rarely surf the web with this laptop. I lost my desktop icons and was stumped.

I have AV programs I have bought for my other machines like Spybot and PC Tools and Iolo System Mechanic to name a few. I was just lazy on this machine because it came with Norton. The machine is about 2 years old so my mistake.

“Never get comfortable with Norton AV. Ever.”

In my opinion, Norton IS a virus.
Another expat friend of mine here has Norton, and his computer is a total mess with bugs and virus.

I have been using Avast for the last 5 years, never a problem.

Right now I’m running Linux off a CD. As this particular machine does not have the ability to write to a CD I’m totally immune.

"...I have been using Avast for the last 5 years, never a problem..."

I was put onto Avast by Kim Komando.com ten years ago. That may be one reason I've kept this MS Millennium running fine for ten years!

Brief and costly diversions to Norton and McAfee cost me many hours of fixing their errors.

One problem, at least with dial-up, is a long—5-10 minute—daily downloading. (Which I tolerate, given the alternatives). Spybot and Ad-Aware, also free, help.

Based on a little Googling, I think Avast is based outside the US.

Avast is a Czech company.

I run Webroot Spy Sweeper, Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware (manually, once a week), and the McAfee that comes free with Comcast. I also run Window Washer on a regular basis. I have never had a virus or malware problem, ever.

Not only do Symantec products suck, but their treatment of customers is the worst I have ever experienced (for computer stuff, anyway).

Resource hogs, and being relatively currently malware magnets (the last year). If your AV has V’s, you’ve gotta scratch your head there.

Avast, AVG, Avira...all good. Combine them with Spybot S7D and Spyware Blaster...keep them all updated and its a good defense.

I also recommend a couple of other free progs to keep the box running smooth.
http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html
and
http://www.ccleaner.com/
aka...Crap Cleaner.

Defraggler is a darn good defrag prog and its free.
http://www.defraggler.com/

If you want the best defrag and don't mind spending bit...I recommend Perfect Disk...http://www.perfectdisk.com/

These will keep things slick and smooth.

I love avast it is my antivirus and every couple of weeks I do an online scan with ESET just to introduce a competitors look at everything.

http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/scanner.php?i_agree=14

I am a scanning nut, when I am away from the computer I like it to be doing something. If I will be away for an hour then I do a spyware/malware scan, if I’m going to be away from the computer for three hours then I do a virus scan.

Maybe I spoke too soon. I tried Norton first but my licensed expired. AVG which I normally love wa overwhelmed. The virus is Win32.Parite which is a SOB. AVG would fix infected files and the 1500 + copies overwhelmed it. I rarely used this machine or surfed.

Hit it with Avast. It seemed to work. My desktop icons returned. Just to be sure I had bought PC Tools Spyware Doctor & Antivirus. 3 PC license and bought it cause it supported Win 2000.

I ran PC Tools and it found 259 copies of Win32.Parite and a couple others that Avast must have missed. I had done nothing on the machine after Avast. The question is if Win32.Parite is really gone. it seems to regenerate or hide????? If PC Tools failed then I may break down and spend a fortune on kaperinsky.

I lost my Internet - I plug into the switch and nothing. Befoire I could plug into any connect hotel DSL, office small hubs and got the net. Ii will check the wireless. It is a Dell. Cannot figure out why internet is not working.

Maybe the AVG and Avast have firewalls. I will uninstall both. Tried to uninstall Norton crap and it would not remove itself. I hate Symantec especailly after the CEO came out for Obama.

I can download data on a program I have so the internet connection works but the browser will not open. I did not download Firefox as a backup.

I have my Dell disks but i do not want to reformat. Trying to figure how to get Firefox on when I cannot get on the net?? Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Could I download from another machine to a ROM and install Firefox from a ROM?

On a related note, I highly recommend Malwarebytes. Fabulous anti-malware program. Saved my machine twice now.

Thanks for the tip. how much?

Yesterday I could get on the Net but after Avast I thought got it - I think PC Tools finally got the virus. I now have AVG, Avast, PC Tools and Norton on my machine.

It is on the net to pull data from another program I have but the browser will not connect. I wonder if the browser is trashed? Maybe I should uninstall AVG and Avast because maybe it is multiple firewalls but my data pulkler is not affected. ????????

No. It seems my Windows Explorer browser is not working???

It was and maybe Avast or PC Tools in zapping this Win32.Parite virus zapped my browser.

I do not want to reformat my drive and reinstall everything. I wonder if I can download Explorer or Firefox on another machine to a ROM????

Thanks.

Yeah, you've got malware that's blocking your access to malwarebytes.org, probably. here's what to do :

Step one : go to anonymouse.org It's a proxy server that will get around the block.

Step two : copy and paste this into the Enter Website Address box : http://www.malwarebytes.org
Click "surf anonymously."

Step three : download the program (newest is the February 11th version.), install it, and update it. Then run it.

Let me know if this works.
