Diesel says future Riddick films will go to Underverse and Furya
SciFi Wire ^ | 03/14/09 | Fred Topel

Vin Diesel, who revealed earlier this week that David Twohy was writing another Chronicles of Riddick film, offered more details on Friday and clarified that only part of the film would have a smaller scale, a la the predecessor film Pitch Black. Diesel told a conference call last week that the film would open with Riddick struggling to survive alone against carnivorous monsters.

"There is a scaled-down portion of this that goes back to the Pitch Black style of telling the story," Diesel said in a group interview in Hollywood, where he was promoting Fast & Furious. "It's hot."

Diesel added that his plan is still to have four Riddick films in total. The third would only be part two of what he always envisioned as a trilogy to follow Pitch Black.

"Well, you remember when I had talked about Riddick, I talked about Riddick as being the Fellowship in the Tolkien [Lord of the Rings] series. So I was using Pitch Black as Hobbit, as the independent story that introduces you to the world of Middle-earth, and then taking The Chronicles of Riddick and treating it as a trilogy that goes from the story that you saw to the Underverse and ultimately to Furya in the third film."

Twohy's current script is not quite set to complete the Furya journey, so there is still one more film planned.

"Yeah, absolutely," Diesel said. "That's exactly what I'm saying. So if you think of Pitch Black as an introduction to the world—if you think of Lord of the Rings, and I'm just using it as a parallel—you're thinking of Lord of the Rings, there are three books, a trilogy. You would think of The Chronicles of Riddick as the first in that trilogy, and there will be two more to follow."

Yeah same here. In my opinion they’re the only things Diesel has been really good in.

Those will sell hugely, IMO. Most people simply missed the first two due to the lack of enormous marketing of other popular movies, but most people now know about the first two by having watched them long after they were introduced.

I like them a lot. Pitch Black was very intense and had a great story line. Plus, it introduced me to Claudia Black. :)

I liked Diesel in both.

Chronicles of Riddick was laughably awful. I liked the guy with the soft shelled crab on his head. I couldn’t imagine a trilogy of those. Pitch Black wasn’t awful, but I’m kinda bored with these “badass” protagonists, who are a dime a dozen. I wouldn’t mind seeing one of these types of movies with a hero who isn’t just a thug.

Pitch black was really good. Chronicles was a dissapointment to me.

I feel that each of these movies is really amazing on several levels.

USA did an amazing job with marketing and finance of the first movie (Pitch Black), and since it was one of Diesel’s earlier movies, name recognition was non-existent. This helped to bolster the sales of the movie after Chronicles, as he’d done F&F after Pitch Black.

Compared to Pitch Black, Chronicles pales, but overall, each movie was played out well, and the storyline, while fantastical, is grounded in some semblance of possibility. The burning planet sequence was arguably far-fetched, but the action of the sequence was enough to keep the audience, myself included, riveted.

I’m glad that they’re going back to the old style. If they can manage to salvage the story line, the movie may actually be pretty good.

And as far as Vin goes, I think he’s a solid actor, funny and passably intelligent. He doesn’t come off as a Hollywood vanity-case, and I think that’s his most endearing quality.

I don’t doubt you but I can’t remember him at all in that movie.

Actually, I would consider it a sign of a good actor if you can't remember him being in a particular movie. That means he became the character well enough. Of course, I'm not saying Diesel is a good actor. He's OK. You probably don't remember him because, at the time, he was a nobody.

This line might jog your memory: "Drop Dead, Corporal. And another thing - every time you salute the Captain, you make him a target for the Germans, so do us a favor and don't do it. Especially when I'm standing next to him. Capiche?"

Yes, I loved the part where the 500 ft tall wall of fire was racing towards him but he protected himself by dousing with a canteen of water - so unexpectedly effective.

Ahh I do remember the line and I can picture him saying it.

Funny that you mention him becoming the character. It’s the exact opposite reason I thought Jimmy Fallon was perfect in his few lines in Band of Brothers. Fallon played a somewhat out of place kid in the middle of a war so having a comedian play that uncomfortable dramatic role was near perfect in my opinion.

IT'S A SIGN! Of what, I don't know...

I have the movie on DVD and I break it out every June 4, every Memorial Day and every Veterans Day, along with "Blackhawk Down" and "Full Metal Jacket".

Agreed.

Just like Wesley Snipes was born to be “Blade”, Vin needs to realize that Riddick is his one true meal ticket.

Stick with what you’re good at.

Oh, yeah. I was happy to hear that Diesel was a "bigtime" geek on G4 last week (they were talking about his new videogame). It is weird, though, to hear him talk as himself - he sounds REALLY effeminate. You expect him to start talking about getting his nails done and going shopping for a new cell phone... Too much time in Cali, I guess.
