Florida Tech research may save lives in suicide bombings

Where a person stands makes a difference

MELBOURNE, FLA. —Florida Institute of Technology researchers have determined that where a person is standing in a room or other location during a suicide terrorist attack can have a great bearing on survival and injuries.

Florida Tech Fulbright Scholar Zeeshan-ul-hassan Usmani and Daniel Kirk, assistant professor in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering, will present "Virtual Iraq-Simulation of Insurgent Attacks" at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Symposium on Computational Intelligence. The conference is in Nashville, Tenn., from March 30 to April 2. Usmani will present the paper on April 2 at noon.

The two researchers have developed accurate physics-based models of a suicide bombing attack, including casualty levels and explosive composition. Their work also describes human shields available in the crowd with partial and full coverage in both two- and three-dimensional environments.

Their virtual simulation tool assesses the impact of crowd formation patterns and their densities on the magnitude of injury and number of casualties of a suicide bombing attack. For a typical attack, the writers suggest that they can reduce the number of fatalities by 12 percent and the number of injuries by 7 percent if their recommendations are followed.

Simulation results were compared and validated by real-life incidents in Iraq. Line-of-sight with the attacker, rushing toward the exit and stampede were found to be the victims' most lethal choices both during and after the attack.

The findings of the study, although preliminary, may have implications for emergency response and counter terrorism.

First mistake is calling it a "suicide" bombing. Secondly, why is a guy named Zeeshan-ul-hassan Usmani busy studying homicide bombings? And who paid for this crap?

Umm. Isn’t this just a rehash of the inverse square law? It doesn’t take much intelligence to know that if you are further away or shielded by other bodies or obstacles, that you have a MUCH higher chance of surviving any blast.

You can easily turn the study around to maximize the deaths a homicide bomber can cause.

This study stinks.

Good case in point. A desk support can make all the difference.

Don’t stand in a corner if the perp pulls the pin in the room with you, either. Oh yeah, open your mouth, too.

Actually, there was at least one more bomb attempt on Hitler. The bomb went off on schedule, but Hitler had left the kill zone a few minutes earlier.

There were, in all, about 13 attempts on his life. Seems like he had some pretty good demonic protection - a charmed life, some might say. Well, he got what he deserved in the end and he's gone to Judgement.

hmm, First I have read the paper they are presenting. It does not tell you to stand behind a fat guy or suggest a shield, but rather that the location, not distance, will make a difference.

Second, I know Zeeshan. You might want to find out more about him (try google) or read some of the books he has written. When he returns home, he will be in danger because of what he has had to say in favor of America. In fact, I’d rather have Zeeshan Usmani in the White House than what is there now. The longer he stays here, the more he learns to appreciate freedom and the Constitution, and the more he wants to bring it back to his home. Unlike Michelle O., it did not take a personal award to make him proud of this country “for the first time in [his] life”.

If you feel you can judge a man’s intelligence or honesty - or character - based only on his name, than you are less of a good American than he would be if he were an American. He has met many of that type - but he hasn’t generalized from that, that all Americans are close-minded bigots.

I know I have not been freeping a lot recently, but those who remember me know I don’t go around defending Muslims and/or terrorists. But you folks who made some of the comments about Zeeshan should be ashamed of yourselves for what you have said when you know nothing at all about him.

I don’t at all understand the inference of your post suggesting we are bigots. There isn’t a single post here that could be interpreted as such. Perhaps a link to the article, presentation would be helpful.

The synopsis says exactly what I said - that location is the key to survivability of a bomb blast. It doesn’t take much intelligence to know that - is all I am saying. In other words, if you walk up to the murder-bomber and give him a hug when he pushes the button, you have a much lower chance of survivability that if you are shielded by a crowd or other barrier. I’m almost certain their study suggests the same thing, but they’ve just added some math to it.

Its an interesting concept, but surely can’t be used in all circumstances, as locations and bombs will vary considerably.

Maybe you think I am too sensitive? Were these all meant to be funny? I doubt it, but I would prefer to be wrong than think Freepers have been infected by the DU writing style.

The paper you have posted is not the one they are presenting, the correct version of the paper can be downloaded from http://my.fit.edu/~zusmani/Virtual.pdf and more about his research is available at
http://research.fit.edu/blast/people.php

By the way, I believe you will find his website as controversial as something can be, try to measure your worth in
