French composer Maurice Jarre, best known for his music on classic Hollywood films, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 84.
Jarre, who had been suffering from cancer, rose to prominence relatively late in life.
His breakthrough came in 1962 when he wrote the score for Lawrence of Arabia, for he was awarded an Oscar.
He won two further Oscars for Doctor Zhivago and A Passage to India, and composed music for more than 150 films.
His scores enhanced the work of some of the film industry's greatest directors - among others David Lean, Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston and Luchino Visconti.
He also wrote symphonic music for theatre, ballet and television, including the 1970s mini-series Jesus of Nazarath.

He picked a good time to move on.
What could he compose with such movies as "I Love You Man", and "What Happens in Vegas"?

Maurice Jarre also wrote the score for “Firefox”, where a Russian-speaking U.S. pilot steals a thought-driven Soviet MiG from under the KGB’s noses.
Saw it while stationed in Germany in 1983. The music and the film were great for morale.

Wasn’t that delightful? My favorite ones were the almost ethereal scores to ‘Witness’ and ‘Year of Living Dangerously.’ Isn’t it great he also did the score for ‘Top Secret!’

The maestro won three Oscars.....Lawrence of Arabia, 1962, Dr. Zhivago, 1965, and A Passage to India, 1984.
Does it seem possible that Lawrence of Arabia was made forty-freepin'-seven years ago?
Makes me feel kinda creaky!

While I wouldn't rank him as one of my very favorites, he had a distinct and interesting musical voice. He went from the bombastic orchestral work of LAWRENCE to the ethereal 80's-90's phase of the Peter Weir films (like WITNESS) and AFTER DARK MY SWEET to the above mentioned MOON OVER PARADOR, which showed one can write big orchestral scores with wit. His lesser-known scores like VILLA RIDES and IS PARIS BURNING? have themes as interesting as his well-known David Lean scores.
His score for DR ZHIVAGO was butchered by the producer, who kept sticking the Lara's Theme variations all over. Get the CD to hear Jarre's true intentions for the score. It's a far more varied work than the movie would have you believe.
I urge anyone interested in his work to find the CD of his score for the TV miniseries JESUS OF NAZARETH. Even to an atheist like me, this is magnificent, spiritual music, nothing like the Biblical scores of Bernstein and Rozsa but really moving and listenable.
I could talk about film music all day, but it's too bad the subject only comes up when one of the greats dies. There aren't many left.
