But once again he lists his biggest influence as Neil Peart. Don't get me wrong, I think Neil is fantastic.
Portnoy names his biggest influences as Rush drummer Neil Peart and composer/guitarist Frank Zappa. Portnoy has won 23 awards from Modern Drummer magazine, including "Best Up & Coming Talent" (one time), "Best Clinician" (two times), "Best Educational Video/DVD" (two times), "Best recorded performance" (6 times) and "Best Progressive Rock Drummer" (for 12 consecutive years), and is also the second youngest person (at 37 years of age) to be inducted into the Rock Drummer Hall of Fame since Neil Peart was inducted in 1983 (at 31 years of age).

I first heard of Ayn Rand when reading an article on Rush in the 1970s.
Dedicating an album to Ayn Rand won’t get you anywhere
in that decadent industry.
Their individualist lyrics and superior musicianship puts them head and shoulders above almost any other band ever.
And that is what keeps them out of the RRHOF.
However, I don’t think they particularly care to be lumped
in with the likes of Madonna(?) and other assorted dregs anyway.
Which reminds me, I will order “A Farewell To Kings” and “Hemispheres” today to replace my vinyl(!) that I wore out long ago.

Neil Peart has always written just about everything that Rush does, he was into Ayn Rand way back when.
