Geddy Lee and Neil Peart of Rush arrive at the Dreamworks' premiere of "I Love You, Man." And while Paul Rudd and Jason Segel may love the band, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sure doesn't.

When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame holds its annual induction ceremony April 4, there once again won

Their politics aside, this is my favorite RUSH song:

“Red Barchetta”

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I’ve got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

The list. Plenty of non-rock-and-roll there, but as stated above no prog rock. Nice.

Neal Peart: the best drummer in all of music.

With all due respect, you need to check out Art Blakey and get back to us. . .

Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater might be winning by a nose there.

But once again he lists his biggest influence as Neil Peart. Don't get me wrong, I think Neil is fantastic.

Portnoy names his biggest influences as Rush drummer Neil Peart and composer/guitarist Frank Zappa. Other favorites include drummers Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Peter Criss, Simon Phillips, John Bonham, Vinnie Paul, Carl Palmer, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, and bands such as Rush, The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Tool, Meshuggah, Pantera, Muse, Metallica, Megadeth, Jellyfish, Iron Maiden, KISS, Phish, Deep Purple, Radiohead, Umphrey's McGee, U2 and Jane's Addiction.

Portnoy has won 23 awards from Modern Drummer magazine, including "Best Up & Coming Talent" (one time), "Best Clinician" (two times), "Best Educational Video/DVD" (two times), "Best recorded performance" (6 times) and "Best Progressive Rock Drummer" (for 12 consecutive years), and is also the second youngest person (at 37 years of age) to be inducted into the Rock Drummer Hall of Fame since Neil Peart was inducted in 1983 (at 31 years of age).

Didn't they dedicate one of their albums to Ayn Rand?

I first heard of Ayn Rand when reading an article on Rush in the 1970s.

Dedicating an album to Ayn Rand won’t get you anywhere
in that decadent industry.
Their individualist lyrics and superior musicianship puts them head and shoulders above almost any other band ever.
And that is what keeps them out of the RRHOF.
However, I don’t think they particularly care to be lumped
in with the likes of Madonna(?) and other assorted dregs anyway.
Which reminds me, I will order “A Farewell To Kings” and “Hemispheres” today to replace my vinyl(!) that I wore out long ago.

Neil Peart has always written just about everything that Rush does, he was into Ayn Rand way back when.

Anthem

Know your place in life is where you want to be
Don’t let them tell you that you owe it all to me
Keep on looking forward...no use in looking ‘round
Hold your head above the ground and they won’t bring you down

Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind
A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind
We marvel after those who sought
The wonders of the world, wonders of the world
Wonders of the world they wrought

Live for yourself...there’s no one else
More worth living for
Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more

Well, I know they’ve always told you
Selfishness was wrong
Yet it was for me, not you, I came to write this song
